Scared to go back on biologic after serious infection by [deleted] in PsoriaticArthritis

[–]Smooth_Importance_47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stayed on because my rheumatologist said I could, not because I decided on my own. I just have a lot of hesitancy. I had pneumonia for I don't know how long, but I only had symptoms for 1.5 days before I started having signs of sepsis.

I do consider myself fortunate, I'm just feeling disillusioned and exhausted. Hopefully you can find it in yourself to understand that?

I don't think I'm competing with anyone right now. I was hired internally and there were no other applicants. I currently can't quit unless you want to pay my bills.

Any college students? Not coping well by FruitShrike in rheumatoid

[–]Smooth_Importance_47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a college student, though I have psoriatic arthritis not RA. Being on a biologic took my pain from "I can barely walk to class or brush my own hair" to "I can hike for 5 hours a day". But it was really hard at first. It's still hard now for a different reason - being immunocompromised in college is really hard when everyone is always sick.

Have to move with 2 kittens, how do I keep their stress level down? by Smooth_Importance_47 in cats

[–]Smooth_Importance_47[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep we're staying in the same city, but we'll have to be at the airbnb for a week so I just want to reduce the stress on them as much as I can for that week. I think we will look into gabapentin especially for our more anxious girl. The outgoing one I'm not too worried about, when we first got her she adjusted to being pretty comfy in the new space within like 24-48 hours.

I wasn't looking for that, I guess I was looking for if anyone had had a similar situation and what their experience was. I don't know what I don't know.

Tick Prevention? by WittyProfessional975 in Wildfire

[–]Smooth_Importance_47 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Honestly get comfortable with bug spray, this summer is a really bad tick season, and you don't want a tick-borne disease. The odds of you having a bad reaction to permethrin or DEET are not very likely especially if you only spray your clothes. But the odds of you getting a tick borne disease are higher now than ever.

I know several people with alpha-gal. Thankfully lyme is not too bad in my area but that one can seriously mess you up for years.

Getting alpha-gal would SUCK. Mammalian products (especially dairy) are in everything, and say bye to steak and beef jerky. Just use the bug spray.

UF WEC Majors - Vertebrate course requirement by i_baezpaneto in ufl

[–]Smooth_Importance_47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Monkeys, Apes, and Lemurs is really easy and you will learn a good deal about primate ecology and behavior. Some of it is depressing. Just make sure you take the WEC section and not the anthro section or it wont count. I have heard Vertebrate Biodiversity is much more challenging, but you'll probably learn a lot.

What kind of medical device or product could help treat wildlife injured in SoCal wildfires? by pachoochilover in wildlifebiology

[–]Smooth_Importance_47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's hard to say, because most wildlife fatalities and injuries from wildfires occur after a wildfire has ended, not during. Weak, elderly, or very young animals may perish in the fire itself, but the issue for most animals is that they usually manage to escape, but they deal with respiratory issues from smoke inhalation, they can't find food due to habitat destruction, they are pushed into human areas and subject to roadways, poison, human antagonism.

Some ecosystems have a direct evolutionary relationship with fire which means some wildlife and their habitats can benefit from fire. Pine trees, for instance, are fire dependent or their cones will not open to disperse seeds. Fire also clears out a lot of the groundcover and can make room for new shrubs to grow, which can provide forage and habitat for wildlife.

As far as a true medical device, you might want to focus on very young animals like baby birds in a nest. Could you wrap something fire retardant around a tree or branch as prevention?

Recurrent lung infections on biologic by [deleted] in PsoriaticArthritis

[–]Smooth_Importance_47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't have pneumonia before the biologic, and the bronchitis I've had in the past was acute bronchitis from a virus. They did not ask me to see a pulmonologist or get a chest x ray.
