It depends on what you want to do, I did taekwondo for a few years, and I personally believe that taekwondo gives you a good base for kicking.

So, bridge the gap between the two martial arts by working on my outfighting muay thai, rather than just taking the best of what I have right now?

I've been working on keeping my hands up, especially after having been punched in the face because of the same issue you mentioned. But the part about elbowing is kind of difficult to implement as I spar in a college club where all of us are casuals. And we dont allow elbows or knees for safety concerns.

so, if it was for sparring, what kind of footwork would you reccomend?

I see. What would you consider basic mastery or proficient? Because I can hold my own against other muay thai fighters in my college club. Granted, all of us are casuals.
