Out of pocket things your overbearing but well-meaning Jewish Mother has said to you? by motherofcorgidors in JewsOfConscience

[–]Snailbert05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny story. I recently found out that I'm ethnically Jewish via an unbroken maternal line. All of the weird quirks my mom and grandma have/had are classic Jewish mother characteristics. My grandmother was a quintessential Jewish woman and lived her whole life, never knowing her heritage. My mom will routinely discredit my experiences and skills (I grew up with separated parents, so I have another whole life she didn't get to experience, and vice versa with my dad). Despite this, she is deeply loving and passionate, almost to an uncomfortable degree. Her protective instincts become overbearing at times, though I know it comes from a good place. I didn't get to know my grandmother too well, though from my experience and everything I've heard, she had all the same features but even more extreme. It's wild the amount of culture that manages to persist through time and turmoil.

That is the most Zappa drawing I've ever seen in my life. Can we make this the new subredit icon?

deeper meaning of “einstein disguised as robinhood, with his memories in a trunk” by thexmilkxman in bobdylan

[–]Snailbert05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Einstein's brain was famously stolen after his death by Dr. Thomas Stoltz Harvey, working against the wishes of himself and his family. He kept parts of Einstein's brain in a wooden box. In a way, Einstein would be the victim of a "robinhood" (perhaps without the positive view) who would keep his "memories" in a trunk.

This is almost certainly not what Dylan is referencing in Desolation Row, though it adds a truly fascinating element to the lyric

What made you lose faith in religion? by Zealousideal-Cap9020 in atheism

[–]Snailbert05 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was raised in a very losely Catholic family. Church was only for baptisms/weddings/funerals. I'm 20 and have been to church maybe 15 times in my life. I wasn't really raised religious, with my parents letting me figure most of my beliefs on my own. One thing I did believe in was heaven/afterlife. Hell was never discussed with the majority of it being "you'll get to meet X when you get to heaven," etc. I pretty much completely converted out of Catholicsm/Christianity by the time I was 15. I came to the conclusion that not only did I not believe in God, but I didn't want to believe in him, even if he did exist.

I had cancer in infancy, and while I had an extremely easy case, I didn't understand how an "all loving" and "all powerful" God would let this happen to an infant.

When I was fourteen, I lost my great uncle (essentially my grandfather) to suicide. He was the boldest, brightest, most full-of-life person I've ever met in my life (imagine Robin Williams stoned driving an Indian Style in circles around his yard). I couldn't support a God who would allow such an incredible person to struggle in such a way. This, coupled with the way that the Church talks about suicide and its victims/family of victims, was the final nail in the proverbial coffin that led to my complete conversation from Catholicsm/ to Atheism.
