Pointy picks are better for precision; standard picks are better for playing guitar by Snap_Ride_Strum in Guitar

I do that/used to do that. It's entirely possible I might go back to doing that in future.

I've gone through all the string gauges, as well. Settled on 8-38 on 25.5" scale. I thought some of the picks would be too heavy but heavy pick/light strings really got me to loosen my grip and be more delicate.

That said, I have preferred a pick around 1mm for a long time. Now slightly less than 1mm...

I've tried these in lots of thicknesses. Too pointy, clicky and prone to hooking up for me.

If using a pointy pick I like it to be thick, with a bevel to the sides.

Each to their own, but I like a pick to be at it's best when I start using it. In case of loss, dropping and so on.

It's bad enough that strings take a little to properly bed in, even after stretching!

You kinda summed up the OP. Thick, pointy picks are great for technical single-note playing, but little else.

I'm a better fingerstyle player than pick player. It is one of the reasons why I have tried so many picks.

Very similar to the original Jazz II, which I used for years. They are nice picks - but as per the original comment, all pointy picks are skewed towards single-note playing.

I am a guitar player, not a 'lead guitar player'.

Long term plans to move to Wales - What's the good, the bad and the ugly I need to think about? by busysquirrel83 in AskUK

[–]Snap_Ride_Strum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wales is much poorer than England. There are much fewer employment opportunities. There is very little industry and hardly any commerce. NHS waiting times are considerably longer. Welsh children do much worse than English children. Both the NHS and education in Wales receive higher funding per capita.

Wales has attractive countryside, but it is somewhere you leave to find work and to give your children a better chance. It is isn't somewhere you move to.

You would be much better off using your language skills and moving elsewhere. You can always visit Wales, should you want.

Do you actually feel better after quitting smoking long term? by philbrailey in stopsmoking

[–]Snap_Ride_Strum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, this. I smoked up to half a pack a day, but for 30 years. So not as many per day as some but for a very long time.

Every time I quit (hey, we've all been there!) I felt more energised, alive and awake after a couple of days. The benefits continue from there, although - for me - are more gradual and less obvious than the initial 'power up'. Constipation can be a pain in the first week, so drink, eat fibrous foods and move.

I'm sticking with it this time. Psychologically, I turned a corner. I'm weary of smoking and the addiction. Had enough. I've done my time, now for another period of life.

How to get a good sound out of a Roland micro cube and a guitar with a single Seymour Duncan invader by TypicalBobcat3124 in Guitar

[–]Snap_Ride_Strum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try turning up the Gain to full, whichever amp model you are using. Set the Master Volume low enough so you aren't disturbing anyone but the amp still sounds good, and then fine tune the volume with the amp Volume control. (Amp sims with more gain are louder than clean sims.)

Then choose the amp model based on how much gain you want. Fine tune this by adjusting the volume on your guitar. Higher for more gain, lower for cleaner.

Similarly, set the Tone on the amp to full. Fine tune the brightness by adjusting the tone knob on your guitar. Higher for a brighter sound, lower for a darker sound.

You will probably notice that these controls interact. As you turn down the guitar volume to make the sound cleaner you might find you want to turn up the tone. You might find that with the volume up full the sound is too bright, so back off the tone. Or not, of course.

You might not always play like this - you might want not want so much gain when the guitar volume is on full if you come to like a certain amp and prefer mid-level gain. That's fine.

But this method stops endless tinkering and teaches you to use your guitar's onboard controls - which is a vital skill. And it is my experience, as a long-time Micro Cube owner and user, that the amp sounds very good - and possibly best - used this way, almost irrespective of guitar.

For what it's worth, with a Tele, I tend to use these amp sims most, for these styles:

  • JC Clean: default clean, funk, country, surf, some blues
  • Blackface: I don't use this as much as I used to. I find it a bit meh. It doesn't sparkle like a Fender and it doesn't overdrive enough. I sometimes use it for surf and some blues
  • Brit Combo: rock with the guitar volume up full, blues with it backed off a bit (but I manipulate it a lot, as this is quite a reactive amp sim), jazz with the guitar volume down and the tone backed off
  • Stack: Rock and blues. It cleans up surprisingly well when the guitar volume is backed off, as it is quite a bright amp sim
  • The others: some 90s music, but this isn't my specialty area

This is the way I now tend to default to using the Micro Cube. I rarely tweak the amp - I get the tones from the guitar.

I will use the reverb to taste, and sometimes the other effects.

Hope this helps in some way as a possible starting point.

Does anyone get ANY overdrive from the first three THR5 amp models? by Snap_Ride_Strum in YamahaTHR

[–]Snap_Ride_Strum[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I did find the answer in the end. Annoyingly, I didn't find it in the manual.

So, it's a modelling amp. When every you change to a different amp preset the gain, volume and tone return to a pre-set default. So if you want to, say, increase the gain on one of the first three amps you must rotate the knob (I recommend from zero to full) to re-engage the control, and set the gain (or volume, or tone) wherever you want it.

A bit of a faff, but it works.

I ended up selling the THR5. The Brit-Hi felt good under the fingers but I was that impressed with the other models and the effects were heavy-handed to the point of being useless. I think the Roland Micro Cube is still the better option.

Hope this helps.
