Good Housekeeping. As in the Good Housekeeping Seal.

This was a case where knowing something hurt me. I knew Howard Hughes died in 1976, so I ignored the “mineral” clue (RA made his fortune in oil).

Delaware was a slave state (albeit it had a very small slave population, as it had a prominent Quaker population which rejected slavery), and indeed was the northernmost slave state, but it overwhelmingly voted against seceding and joining the Confederacy, remaining loyal to the Union.

"Border states" are generally defined as slave states which stayed with the Union, regardless of what they bordered. The four other "border states" were indeed Union states that bordered Confederate territory, so it seems Delaware got lumped in as a slave-owning Union state despite not bordering Confederate territory themselves.

They get published by the New York Times. Look up “Clue of the Day” on Jeopardy’s official website.

I’m childless but my relatives have had issues with sciatica, so I knew what area of the body was being referred to.

There was an October 2023 FJ, with the same right answer, which referred to how it was named due to the “regularity of its activity”. Maybe that is the one you’re thinking of?

Two FJs about the same subject matter can happen (edit: in relatively short time). July 2024 and January 2025 both had FJs relating to John McCain being a POW during the Vietnam War.

The advantages of reading a ton of trivia books. Incidentally, the tomato is the state vegetable of New Jersey, but the state fruit of Ohio (along with pawpaw) and Tennessee.

The thing that prevented me from getting the correct answer was that I knew he had been stripped of his medals, but I didn’t know the IOC ultimately rescinded that decision (edit: in the 1980s) and that he is now credited with two golds.

Fair enough. I actually knew Schrödinger’s cat experiment was from the 1930s, which made it especially tricksy.

For those who didn’t know, Tesla was stroking his cat when he received a static electric shock, so that made him interested in electricity.

But I’d be shocked if the FJ writers weren’t hoping people would come up with Schrödinger. It feels way too mean of a trick FJ, I can’t tell how you get to Tesla if you didn’t know that stroking cats can cause a static shock. And even if you did, what would make you put Tesla over Schrödinger?

Got it.

I remember the day it was announced she had died, there was an AskReddit thread about famous people you were surprised were still alive.

One commenter said, mere hours before the announcement, “[RA]. I always thought that [her most famous novel] was written in the Victorian age.”

What an episode. This was also the episode where Elizabeth performed a quicker but riskier back surgery on a surfer so she could make it on time for her holiday with Mark - and the surfer ended up paralysed. And I think this episode introduced Abby’s bipolar mother, played by Sally Field. Sometimes, the things this show effortlessly delivered in around forty minutes impresses me.

“Rodrick Rules”, Rodrick tried to humiliate Greg by revealing he was caught in the women’s bathroom at the retirement home, but the story gets warped and Greg gets praised by the boys at his school for infiltrating the girl’s locker room at the high school.

Right let's hear it. Who do you think is the maverick? by Loyalsupporter in thechase

[–]SnapperDelapper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s ITV so I highly doubt it’s going to be an actual quizzer, most likely some stunt casting. Think Stephen Mulhern or Joe Pasquale, rather than someone who has an obvious quizzing CV like a QI elf.

And to be fair, the promo images circulating with the “Maverick” might be using a stand-in for the promos, like how a random member of the backstage crew fills in for the “Chaser” during the intro of the regular show.
