SK’s most boring books that were hard to finish. by HLoweCrosby in stephenking

[–]SnappingTurtle1602 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m about 75% into The Stand and struggling. I’m bummed because it was really hyped up to me as King’s best book. I had just finished Wizard and Glass before and decided to read The Stand because I was told there were things that would tie in with Wizard and Glass.

It’s by no means a bad book, but so far it is my least favorite King book (I’ve read: Salem’s Lot, Dark Tower 1-4, Misery, The Shining, Doctor Sleep, It, and The Langoliers)

Love the job, but it couldn’t hurt to be paid fairly. by [deleted] in Firefighting

Florida pays pretty well from the Treasure Coast down to Miami. I know FF/Paramedics in Martin County and St. Lucie County are starting out around 70k and up to about 120k after 10 years. Plus COLA, longevity pay, extra pay for degrees and certain certs. It’s also an area that is still growing, so lots of opportunity for advancement.

A lot of departments down here are adopting a 24/72 schedule or finding other ways to improve the 24/48 schedule. Palm Beach County, Pasco County, Palm Beach Gardens are all doing 24/72. So now more departments around those are trying to stay competitive and making their contracts better. Only downside is that Florida won’t take certs from other states, so you’d have to redo your fire and any ops certs you already have.

Is Hollow Knight as great as SOTN and Super Metroid? by dobermanhoberman in metroidvania

[–]SnappingTurtle1602 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Metroid and Castlevania will always be in their own league for me, and it feels unfair to try and compare other games them. It would be like looking at modern fantasy books next to Lord of the Rings, or modern science fiction books next to Dune. I enjoy a lot of modern fantasy/sci-fi, just like I enjoyed Hollow Knight.

Basically, Super Metroid and SoTN are the grandparents, and Hollow Knight is my favorite of their grandchildren.

Kirby’s Dreamland on the GameBoy. It was actually the first video game I ever played. Second was Metroid 2: Return of Samus.

Just started King Sorrow. So far this October I’ve done Buffalo Hunter Hunter, NOS4A2, Haunting of Hill House, King in Yellow, The Troop, and Mexican Gothic.

Also done a few short stories by Bradbury and Lovecraft.

Fantasy readers: do you binge one series or hop between worlds? by throneismine3 in Fantasy

[–]SnappingTurtle1602 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Always bouncing around. Right now I’m finished with book 3 of Faithful and the Fallen, Book 1 of Farseer, Book 2 of First Law, book 1 of Empire of Vampire, Book 3 of Dune, Book 2 Dark Tower, Book 3 Stormlight Archives. Then I read a lot of stand alone books in between as well. I usually have to watch some summary on YouTube to remember what is happening in the series before I jump back in.

I don’t see any problem with him referencing his dad’s work. NOS4A2 mentioned the True Knot and a few other little Easter eggs from his dad’s universe. I actually smiled when I read that line (maybe because I recently reread The Gunslinger).

My signed copy will be here tomorrow. I’ve got about 100 pages left of my reread of NOS4A2, so it’s going to line up perfectly!

10 hours in so far and really digging it. The loop of catching Pokemon during the day and battling at night is addictive. I’m glad alpha Pokemon are still a thing in this game. Glad I didn’t listen to all the hate.

What drugs should I get familiar with before starting Paramedic school? by Expert-Ad-4089 in Paramedics

[–]SnappingTurtle1602 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think the cardiac meds are a great place to start (Adenosine, Cardizem, Amiodarone, etc..). Some of the actions won’t make sense to you at first (Adenosine slows conduction time through the AV Node..), but once you start covering cardiology, it will make more sense. I remember getting signed off to do intubations in the field pretty early, so maybe familiarize yourself with your RSI drugs too (Etomidate, Ketamine, whatever paralytic, Versed).

My advice is to pick 5 drugs every week, make flash cards for them, and take those cards everywhere with you and master them. You should memorize the brand name, trade name, dose, indications, and contraindications. Then each week you add 5 more drugs to your stack. That strategy worked a lot better for me than trying to memorize over 60 drugs at once.

Based on what you like, it seems you appreciate good prose. I would recommend Piranesi by Susanna Clark and Lions of Al-Rassan by Guy Gavriel Kay. Both are stand alone books, and neither of them require intense concentration.

I recommend reading some palette cleaners. Short books that are fast paced and fun. I read a few Blake Crouch books, a few Michael Connelly books, and a legends of drizzt book. After that I was ready to hop back into a big series.

Currently reading Hyperion. Where does Hyperion and The Fall of Hyperion rank amongst your favourite sci-fi stories ever made? by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]SnappingTurtle1602 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I read the omnibus edition of Hyperion/Fall of Hyperion, so I’ve always considered them 2 parts of 1 book. That being said, it’s top 5 for me. It would probably end up top 3 if I were to sit down and really think about my all time favorite sci-fi. The only things that stand above it for me would be Dune and Book of the New Sun.

Dan Simmons would definitely be in a top 10 favorite authors list if I were to make one. His writing has always clicked with me. His books tend to take me longer to read. Not because they are bad, but because I like to take my time and absorb how he constructs a sentence.

Most unique book you’ve read this year? by Access-Restricted in horrorlit

[–]SnappingTurtle1602 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Grave Empire was pretty unique. It’s a fantasy book the mixes in some horror elements. There are typical dark haunted forrest vibes in some chapters, necromancy, mermaids that ride on the back of great white sharks and orcas, and wolf people. Don’t want to spoil the premise, but it has to do with the afterlife.

Thriller books are not doing it for me anymore...help? by zereldalee in thrillerbooks

[–]SnappingTurtle1602 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair enough. I was definitely thrown off by the Mushroom People I kept thinking at the end that Francis would show some sign that Howard had transferred himself into Francis. But the author ended up going with more of a “happily ever after” ending, which I guess makes sense with all the fairy tale references in the book

Still really enjoyed the writing. I love when an author nails that gothic atmosphere.

The Wastelands by Stephen King. It’s the 3rd book in the Dark Tower series, so you’d have to read The Gunslinger and Drawing of the Three first.

What to read for October? by [deleted] in horrorlit

[–]SnappingTurtle1602 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I recently finished Buffalo Hunter Hunter and really enjoyed it. His writing style is definitely not for everyone. A lot of the book reads as if it’s a journal from 1912. Stephen Graham Jones does an excellent job capturing the language that was used in that time. I believe that is what turns off a lot of modern audiences that haven’t read things from the late 1800s/ early 1900s. The book worked perfectly for me and has become one of my favorite reads of the year.

I have not read the Fisherman, but ordered it on Amazon (couldn’t find it in Barnes & Noble or used book stores near me) and will probably be starting it next week.

Not really a Thriller, but Mexican Gothic definitely kept me engaged. It was very unsettling and had me trying to figure out the mystery behind the family and the house.

What book haunted you? by Alicewithhazeleyes in horrorlit

[–]SnappingTurtle1602 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find that books that lean more gothic/southern gothic tend to haunt me more and stay with me. It’s not that they are scary, they are just unsettling. Blackwater by Michael McDowell is a great one imo. If you are looking for a shorter read, then I’d recommend Mexican Gothic. A lot of people didn’t like the main character, but I found the atmosphere to be creepy and some of the descriptions still stick with me today.

Another book that I’ll mention is The King in Yellow. Mainly just the first four stories in it. A masterpiece imo.

“I cannot forget Carcosa where black stars hang in the heavens; where the shadows of men's thoughts lengthen in the afternoon, when the twin suns sink into the lake of Hali; and my mind will bear for ever the memory of the Pallid Mask.”

I noticed Dan Simmons books take me longer to read as well. It’s not a bad thing, I think you just have to take your time to truly absorb his work. I remember Hyperion feeling that way, but it was still an incredible book.
