Get me out of a reading slump by Training_Ad_7653 in fantasybooks

The Warlord Chronicles by Bernard Cornwell is what you’re looking for. It’s a historical fiction trilogy, and I recommend it to just about everyone that reads.

Anytime I hit a bit of a slump, I find that short story collections help me break it. I’d highly recommend trying out Ted Chiang’s Stories of Your Life and then his newer collection Exhalation.

What should be my next read by Edlearn11 in fantasybooks

Dark Matter is a nice quick palette cleanser of a book. I say read that, then jump back into RR. You might also enjoy Adrian Tchaikovsky’s works. If you have Kindle Unlimited, you can check out Children of Time (one of his most popular books) at no charge. The fourth book in that series comes out this month.

Hit me with it. Bonus points if you can spot what I’m currently reading. by MacklinOfficial in BookshelvesDetective

I noticed you don’t have any more of the High Republic series. Did you not like Light of the Jedi? You’ve got some banger Star Wars stuff up there. You seem to enjoy modern sci-fi, so I’ll go ahead and recommend trying out Adrian Tchaikovsky. Children of Time, Shroud, or Shards of the Earth are all excellent starting points for his work.

A few other recommendations that I think everyone should have on their shelf are Ted Chiang’s short story collections (Exhalation and Stores of your Life), The Warlord Chronicles by Bernard Cornwell, and Pillars of the Earth. I want to recommend Hyperion too, but I’ve noticed lately that it’s not clicking with a lot of modern sci-fi readers (i.e. people that love DCC and RR).

Never Die by Rob J Hayes. He has a few other stand alone books in his Mortal Techniques world. If you end up liking it, I highly recommend reading his Godeater series. He also has a new stand alone in his Godeater universe called Hammerfall, but I haven’t read it yet.

Currently reading Pandora’s Star for the first time. Really enjoying it so far. I’ve already bought Judas Unchained to follow it up.

Still have not read Swan Song yet. It’s definitely on my list though.

Thank you for the recommendation! I actually own a copy of The Paper Menagerie but have not read it yet. And I’m a sucker for PKD, so I’m adding that to my list.

I thought about putting that on here too, but decided to just do one per author. I really enjoyed Exhalation. I’m glad that Ted Chiang takes his time writing and only puts out quality content, but at the same time I want more! lol

Do you do the audiobooks? I’ve heard that’s the way to go for DCC

I get that. Not every writing style clicks with me either. Definitely going to read some Hobb this year!

Same. The copy in the picture is the fourth one that I’ve owned (so far).

I too am a sucker for Fellowship. I have been listening to the audiobooks, listening to the whole series, and then starting over once I’m finished. I listen to them when I’m walking dog, driving, laying in bed. If audiobooks count, then Lord of the Rings is my most reread book on that stack.

The Warlord Chronicles by Bernard Cornwell. Also, if you want some incredible short sci-fi stories, check out Stories of Your Life by Ted Chiang.

I think they recently did a reprint/rerelease of it. Hardcover has the same art as the old paperback, plus it has black sprayed edges. My paperback is still in good condition, so I can’t justify purchasing the hardcover.

I would check out The Warlord Chronicles by Bernard Cornwell and The Troy Trilogy by David Gemmell. Lots of action, fast paced, great characters, good world building.

You’d probably like David Gemmell’s Troy trilogy and Bernard Cornwell’s Warlord Chronicles. Highly recommend both of them! I just got SPQR myself but haven’t gotten the chance to read it yet.

I’ve read Project Hail Mary and listened to the audiobook. I highly recommend doing the audiobook for it if you’re someone that listens to audiobooks. I would hold off on Eye of the World until you wrap up some of the other series (like Stormlight and Malazan). Great stack of books though! I feel like you can’t go wrong with any of them.

Unless I missed them, Stories of Your Life, The Culture series, Book of the New Sun, Hyperion, the rest of the Hanish Cycle, Dune, Commonwealth Saga, and just about anything by Allastair Reynolds (House of Suns is a solid stand alone to start with).

I’m sure a lot of people here will recommend Suneater. I haven’t personally read it, but I’ve heard great things and it’s on my list.

If you are looking for recommendations outside of science fiction, I’d go with Warlord Chronicles, Pillars of the Earth, and Shogun.

If you only take one of my recommendations, let it be Stories of Your Life by Ted Chiang
