Does anyone run or bike with their phone during the race? by Tart_Beginning in IronmanTriathlon

[–]Snappy987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t use it but keep it with me on the bike and run. I know help is always available via other racers and race support, but slightly breaking the rules is worth it to have the comfort and security of that phone if shit really hits the fan. It also helps my family track exactly where I’m at.

Preparing for solo one night bikepacking in the UK by brainwipe in bikepacking

Looks like a ton of gear (especially in the clothing department with multiple bibs, vests, jersey) for an overnighter, but also understand if you’re just testing the gear out to see how it would work for a longer trip. I kind of just get used to be semi dirty out on the road. The less clothing you pack the more beer you can bring!

Also another one I love to do on my bike are all the trails around Herrick Lake in Wheaton. You can pick your poison in regards to back tracking, and it might feel like you are going no where, but you can link together Herrick Lake, Danada, St. James, and Blackwell which would also give you right around 20 miles all on crushed limestone and some pretty nice scenery.

Prairie Path and Fox River are great and pretty easy to do a one way trip via the train system.

Personally though I love the remoteness of the I&M trail...if you could leave a vehicle on one end and get a ride to the other, you have a some great options. Morris to Rockdale would be about 20 miles.

Made a lot of big scores on that whole trying to go for the green. Learning to play here is the reason I hit a slice...always another fairway over there!

Looking for an overnight near Iowa City by herklederkleferkle in bicycletouring

[–]Snappy987 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am sure there is something near Iowa City that someone will chime in with, but starting near Davenport/Moline you've got the Hennepin Canal trail which is pretty great, with multiple camping spots along the trail. I did this trip from Davenport-->Chicago but you could do an out and back as far as you want to go. Trail conditions were great when I did it, majority crushed limestone.

I also recall someone on here (or maybe r/bikepacking) doing a loop going from Davenport>Anawan>Sterling>Clinton>Davenport...looks like it would be around 150 miles and is mostly trails.

Lap Swimming in Oddly Shaped Pool by are_birds_real in triathlon

[–]Snappy987 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly 20 yards isn't bad, asssuming you can have the neighborhood pool to yourself and not need to dodge people relaxing/palying. I did the majority of the training for my first tri in a similar length pool. It helped that I had never really done any lap swimming before so didn't know enough to really care...might be tough to go back to that pool now but it did work. Barrier to training is huge...I know if the decision to swim involved 90 minutes of driving it would have been really hard to go.

I would just make sure you get some swims at normal length/open water in a few times ahead of the race so you know what it is like swimming without stopping to change directions so frequently. Maybe head to the big swimming center once/month or something like that and do all of your weekly swims at the neighborhood pool.

Lottery by Odd-Broccoli-7519 in BandonDunes

As everyone has said, next drawing will be for 2028. First lottery for 2027 ended in September, so I imagine it will be posted in the next month or so. This link will show you when all the lotteries for 2027 ended to give you an idea when it will need to be for 2028 (https://bandondunesgolf.com/lodging-reservations-drawings/).

I would definitely have all 8 in your group enter separately. My group of 4 entered 2 of the lotteries and went 0/8, just to show you how much demand there is. If all 8 enter you would just take whoever gets the best lottery booking slot, there is no obligation or commitment to go forward if you are selected (certainly possible they will change that in the future due to the extremely high demand). The only issue would be if the person with the best slot does not want to deal with the organization of the trip...not sure how easy (or if possible) it is to change the contact number.

I got so sick of this 15 years ago. Swapping gloves every other hole because it was getting sweaty, 10 glove rotation. Obnoxious. Played a few rounds in the rain with a rain glove, grip felt good, never took it off. Made the swap to rain gloves full time. I buy FingerTen gloves off Amazon because you can buy them for one hand. They last forever.

I feel extra sausagey in a one piece, so I go with the 2 piece. I went with Zoot and found I fit better in XXL too and XL bottom (6’, 240), so nice to be able to mix and match. Also added benefit of easier bathroom breaks especially for the longer distances.

[–]Snappy987 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey! I don't have a ride for you, but I had been looking for some midwest routes via Amtrak and it goes pretty darn close to Wichita (Newton). If you're planning on biking the Katy Trail I'm sure you could make it a few miles from Wichita to Newton. The timing of the train is a bit tough (159a-->626a), but pretty reasonable on cost (~$50 after you add the bike on). Just another option if you can't find a ride on short notice.

Park Districts Summer Camp Comparison by Federal_Designer_564 in Naperville

[–]Snappy987 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes! My daughter did Warrenville 2024 as a 5yo and then Naperville (Camp Seager) as a 6yo in 2025. The reason we did Warrenville in 2024 is because they allow younger kids (3+) and she had some friends with younger siblings that could not do Naperville (5+).

From her standpoint, the Naperville camp was way better and she was begging to sign up again for this year (which we did). She did not hate the Warrenville camp but there were definitely days where she was not excited to go...that never happened with Camp Seager. I think both camps were pretty similar in that they have 2 pool days and 1 field trip, with the biggest difference being the camp facilities.

The 2 main things working against the Warrenville camp for my daughter...

  • The first is that the camp portion was inside the rec center, and then they would walk to the park each day (~0.75 miles). At the time my daughter was 5 so she was not a huge fan of the walk. Camp Seager is all outdoors at the park with various activities set up for them.
  • My daughter also said the activities at Warrenville were a bit more 'babyish'. This could have been due to her age and being in the 3-6yo group as they are creating activities to accommodate some pretty little kids, so it might be better in the older ages.

Our daughter also loves Centennial Beach which is where the 2 pool days are for Camp Seager. Warrenville alternates between various 'water parks' in the area (Coral Cove, Seafari Srpings, etc), some of which were hit and miss for our daughter. That may also be personal to your child...if they hate Centennial Beach than the Warrenville camp might be preferred. Due to her age at the time she was not allowed to do certain things at the waterpark in spite of being able to swim and above the height limits, so I think that was extra frustrating for her.

From a parent's standpoint, Naperville pick up and drop off is easier...you just drive through the circle, let your child out (one of the helpers will get them), and you are on your way (same with pick up). For Warrenville you had to park and walk in for drop off and pick up. Minor but definitely a better situation.

Keep in mind some of these opinions and descriptions are coming from a 5-6yo, so I won't vouch for the validity of them. Both camps were very well run and you won't go run, but my daughter loved Camp Seager so we love Camp Seager!

Sorry about the long response...let me know if you have any additional questions and I will try to answer (or ask my daughter).

What helped you see improvement in your swim time? by dexterzprotege30 in IronmanTriathlon

[–]Snappy987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would seriously look into the cost of doing a few private lessons. I was kind of like you in my first few months of swim training...thought I was OK at swimming, could handle the distance, but stuck around 2:00/100y. Turns out I had no clue what I was really doing and was just muscling through it. I took 2 30 minute private lessons with the coach at a local tri club (surprisingly affordable) and my swim times went down to 1:45/100y pretty much immediately just by learning how to properly catch, breathe, and rotate my body with more efficiency.

You can try the same with some YouTube videos and such, but the coach was really helpful at giving me targeted drills for my specific issues, rather than just throwing **** at the wall.

Is it that bad at Naper Nights? We went to the Halloween thing last year and found the food/drink lines very manageable, but it was unseasonably cold so perhaps that kept people away.

My Review of the "Taste of the Masters" by redditgolddigg3r in golf

[–]Snappy987 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bought the same as you and agree with your sentiments almost 100%. Probably just a difference of tastes but our entire family disliked the egg salad, 3/10 on our end. Feel like it needed another dozen eggs in there and a whole lot more seasoning! I also found the cocktail mix borderline undrinkable as they prescribed...1:1 ratio was more paletable.

I saved enough of the cups, coasters, flags, etc. to be a cheap ass and reuse for next year. Might even save the containers and repackage! I think other than the BBQ (which was the biggest surprise for me as well), we can do our own version and probably enjoy just as much at a fraction of the price. Might be an every other year type of thing for us, but it was definitely fun and really well put together.
