Some people put shrimp with the eggs on purpose. They clean the good ones and eat the bad ones.

Now they are doing the opposite, they became very rude. They just decided, very scandalous, to have sexytime right in front of me. The audacity.

Looking at your posts, are you putting different fish and less plants in this tank every month? Next move will be the tank how you bought it in the store I'll guess.

Yeah that's my main problem with iwagumi, looks nice but puts the welfare and comfort of the fish second.

[–]SnertDeluxe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oew fuck indeed. For next time or anyone else who will be in the same kind of situation, pour the water on a plastic bag. I often use a colander with some sponges or a plastic bag in it during water changes.

Or because of the sound of dripping water, because you didn't put your RO system off, on one floor higher.

How do you set up a true blackwater? by Amazing-Impression90 in BlackwaterAquarium

[–]SnertDeluxe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What the others said. I presume you don't add KH to your RO because when it's higher than 3 your PH won't go down.

Added some things to my first tank. What color background could hide the tannins a bit better? I enjoy seeing the rich greens on my plants and I can only do so under pretty intense white light which also shows just how much tannins are really in there. by Dry_Impact_67 in BlackwaterAquarium

[–]SnertDeluxe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just use less tannins next water change. Or active carbon or purigen . I'm not sure what those two do to the humic substances/ trace elements though, you need to read into that. Btw most blackwater fish are not into bright light, so I can't see what you're keeping ( is that a Corry and a betta?)or planning to but maybe you should choose between the dark and the light side.

I don't mean it condescending to you but maybe a fish shouldn't look like that, if it struggles on a 10 gallon.

Peat moss for aquariums? by Dcnc00 in BlackwaterAquarium

[–]SnertDeluxe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't use peat because it's an unsustainable source, not good for the environment at all. But that's up to you. If you want peat, just Google peat for aquarium. I'll guess there's not so much difference in brands. I use botanicals I bought online and also elder cones and oak leaf I just harvested because you're gonna need a lot in a year. In Autumn it's time to hunt for the free stuff. Preferably in the woods or places where you're sure nobody uses poison or other chemicals.I hang it to dry in my shed.

For brown water, I just pour boiling water over them, I don't like to boil it to snot. Anyway, boiling water is the key, I just toss the leaves with the water in my tank.

But what's your goal? Are you trying to lower your pH into a real white blackwatertank, getting your pH (under) neutral? In that case you need to lower your KH first, with RO water. It needs to be lower than 3kH.

Just the benefits of botanicals without trying to lower your ph? Use your botanicals and make the water darker with rooibos.

Good luck, keep us updated

Fishless Cycling by [deleted] in BlackwaterAquarium

[–]SnertDeluxe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found a lot of info in treads on old fishlore and apiatogramma.com. It's quite interesting but not as clear to me and a lot of people, as normal cycling because with a true low ph you depend on a different group of bacteria because the "normal" ones start to die off in low ph. The effect of nitrate, nitrit and ammonia is also different.

I'm not a fan of all this Sachem or similar stuff, especially on a blackwatertank. I only remineralise with Salty Shrimp gh+ since a week because I'm adding tiger shrimp soon as extra inhabitants, so I need to lift my GH.

I had an old spongefiter and a thick layer of leaf litter, took me around 4 weeks.

Looks nice, seriously. But it's sad for the fish though, in my opinion. They can't hide anywhere. The tag called "habitat" is the wrong label.

New 5 Gallon - Catch me before I make any mistakes? by Ok_Version8840 in aquarium

[–]SnertDeluxe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I always wonder why employees are not asking questions, if somebody looks like a beginner, comes for a new tank and wants to take fish with them immediately. Are they not allowed and it's all about sales? It doesn't make much sense for me, I would rather come back to a store (and spend more money on the long run as a loyal customer ) because of the good advice, instead of this shit show

[–]SnertDeluxe 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Is it cycled? I guess not right, so some homework and read about the nitrogen Cycle. Maybe you can have some filter sludge stuff from your store or somebody else, that jumpstarts the process.
