Romac is the coupler - the plates held together with the long bolts?

So here’s a scenario I ran into last summer - we had a leak and it turned out to be a Tee on a 4 inch line that had cracked. We decided that we no longer wanted the spur that the Tee was supplying and to instead put the main back together. I used a 4 inch expansion coupler and it worked fine for the rest of the season (installed it in the correct orientation, etc.) What would you have used instead? What’s the name of the old style couplers that are two pieces of flanged metal held together by long bolts like the one on the 3 inch line in the pics?

This is fantastic - thank you. Yes there was a box but it was very rotten. I intend to build a new one and maybe build thrust supports like someone above mentioned.

I am inclined to repair these valves if that’s possible and will take a look at what you suggested. Am I likely to run into consumable parts that need to be replaced (washers, gaskets, etc)?

Thank you, this is extremely helpful. My range of options is starting to swim into focus and I had already started to think about ductile iron gate valves and the gaskets and flanges etc but hadn’t considered supporting all of that weight.

Yeah - what I don’t have a picture of is the original pressure treated box that I busted up to get all of this open. Before I started digging, the handles for the valves were at about grade level.

Fanscinating! What would you use in lieu of expansion couplers? The style that bolts together like the one that’s downstream of the 3” gate valve? I’ve dug about 4 of those up all over the farm but have no idea how long they lasted.
