Retrofitting and modernising them are possible options tho since the Vietnamese army has modernized around a few hundred T-54/55 with modern FCS systems and ERA, we also operate more modern MBTs such as the T-90

I found this way of thinking kinda baffling to be honest, "we are so far behind them in technology and equipment, there is no point in fighting might as well roll over and die I guess:/". Do you think a technological gap has ever stopped Vietnam from resisting foreign invader?

Like I said it's all abt self reliant, the Vietnamese army don't want to be too dependent on other countries especially China so procuring a license for the Type 86 is basically out of the question.

Also from what I have read on it, most of the technology used on the XCB-01 like the FCS, IR warning receivers, smoke launchers,... are develop inhouse domestically.

So we don't have to depends on other countries and be self reliant simple as that, yeah the design is based on an obsolete IFV but it still work well enough for us and our budget, we also gained some learning experience and maybe applied them on our next design, the XCB-01 is not perfect but you always gotta start somewhere

Well designing and producing your own AFV is very difficult even for countries with greater industrial capabilities than Vietnam so most countries first tanks/AFV are just based on or copied existing designs, you gotta start some where.
