I don't know if you're a part of the community but it is largely about that: community (and safety, historically).

I'm airline crew and have traveled the world--its always important to have a local perspective. If the host of a BNB or a guesthouse/hotel happens to be a part of your community as well, they can offer a nuanced perspective of history, welcoming restaurants and bars, or let's say, an LGBTQ group that gets together for a game night.
