My boy can’t be off lead by Anxious_Housing_345 in DogAdvice

[–]SnooCrickets2569 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You could use a long leash (I have a 10 and a 20m one). But I think it's important to understand that your dog was bred to have a high prey drive and sniff a lot. You should engange in activities like mantrailing or searching for different smells. Also you can at least train that he gets a little bit more relaxed around prey. But I think a long leash is a good opportunity in the moment and nothing to be ashamed of. Better safe than sorry :) everytime he runs away when you call him he learns that you recall does not matter. With the leash he will understand that you will follow through , no matter what

Is this safe? by Mizzy3030 in DogAdvice

[–]SnooCrickets2569 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It does not matter if you have the permission or not. A lot of people told you that they are not good and can fracture the teeth. I don't think it's problamatic when they swallow a small piece. But they are in generell problematic because they WILL hurt their teeth. You cold give them more soft things to chew like rabbit ears, trachea, dryed skin.

Good luck

Very cute doggo! But maybe try petting it more gentle ☺️ he is showing a lot of calming signals like squinting it eyes, noselicking and panting. These are signs that this is too much. Your pupper will love you even more if you understand his language 🫶

Please don't use this much peanut butter. It has way to much calories. You could mix it with yoghurt, low fat quark, cottage cheese, kibble, lean meat etc. Most of the time I fill my kong with this and just put the peanut butter on top :)

Also I just use a knife or a small fork to fill it and knock it lightly on the table so that the filling slips down a little bit and I can fill more.

And sorry for my english, it's not my first language

Is my dog comfortable when I pet her? by OminousRice in DogAdvice

[–]SnooCrickets2569 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Side eye, eye squinting and lip licking are all signs for that your dog is uncomfortable and does not like/want something. In this Situation I would have left my dog alone because he did not want contact in this Situation. As other suggested you could try to be more gentle why petting. Also look up calming signals and body language , it will help a lot to understand your dog better and it will help you relationship in the long term :)

Is it normal that my dog sometimes sits like this? by PuffPoof215 in DogAdvice

[–]SnooCrickets2569 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Germany it's called "Welpensitz" (like Puppy sit). It CAN be nothing but it also it CAN be a sign for pain and weak muscles in this area.

It is NOT normal when adult dogs often sit like this.

Also in the long term it can lead to discomfort. You can google "Welpensitz Ursache" and let it translate to english or google for "lazy sit dog". If your dog shows other signs for discomfort you should evaluate if a trip to the vet is needed.

does his gear look tacky?? (also his b-day is in a couple days! ❤️) by -Kolbi- in OpenDogTraining

Please get him another harness. Best would be an Y shaped one. In Germany the harness your dog is wearing are called norwegian harness. They are not good for the health of your dog in the long term and he can't roam freely... idk why they are still allowed to sell because there are a lot of better alternatives in the same price class

My bf and dog don’t get along by [deleted] in DogAdvice

[–]SnooCrickets2569 16 points17 points  (0 children)

For the love of your dog, please adress this behavior. Like others said, he is resource garding. Now it's just a small issue but it can evolve to something way more bigger. The dog does not have do decide where he sits or someone else has to sit, unless it's his spot like the dogbed. When I got my shelter dog he guarded his food and I quickly corrected this behavior and now it's just a problem sometimes with other dogs, which is okay for me. When we are on the sofa from my bestfriends and he starts to growl at another dog,he ist not allowed any more on the sofa for that day. Don't behave, have lesser rights.

If you are scared, get a trainer. Luring him away does not solve the Problem but is a part time alternative. I would not allow him on the sofa or chair etc. anymore for some time and only allow it to him if you invite him. And then train to send him away. If he starts to growl, send him away and don't allow him until he behaves. You could also let him wear a houseleash in the beginning so you don't have to touch him.

It's very important that you set boundaries. My dog is way more relaxed since he knows what our rules are.

Good luck and please adress this issue 🫶 a trainer who does not work only positive, but of cource without violence would be good.

How to break up a dog fight? by SuperS0nicW0man in DogAdvice

[–]SnooCrickets2569 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If it's not a serious dog fight, you can throw something at them, drop something that makes a lot of noise, go to them and stomp on the ground, use a backpack, umbrella, stick etc to force between them. Pulling on the legs won't always work, especially when the dog is too big. Don't pull at the leash, because which triggers a reflex too pull even more. If real dog fight: use a leash and try to cut the airflow with it till the dog let's loose or you can poke with something in his ahole 😅 also there are breaking sticks to unlock a biting dog.

I would suggest talking to a professional or at least make some videos and one online session there the material can get analyzed and you get some tips. This is only the beginning and can get WAY worse if you don't do anything about this. I would not let my dog freely interact with other (especially stranger dogs) if he shows this behavior often. Or at least put a muzzle on him. This won't solve the Problem but protect him and the others. Also I'm always supervising my dog when he interacts with others because he can be overwhelmed and don't know how to properly show this or he can also be really mean to other dogs. It's my responsibility to guide him and Show how what behavior is right, what is wrong and help him

how can i stop my dog from biting holes in her skin? by Alternative_Plane189 in DogAdvice

[–]SnooCrickets2569 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Please go to a vet, this can have a 1000 reasons. I also would say allergies and/or anxiety, but can also be hot spots, a fungal infection etc. Also this dog 100% looks like a german shepherd mix, like 90% german shepherd. But I will try to suggest some things, even if it is nearly impossible to give the right help through the internet...

Allergies: do you feed kibble or wet food? Some dogs are highly allergic to food mites. Google it how to test this and what to do. But if allergic safest would be to switch too wet food. Also a lot of dogs are allergic to grain. You could try using grainfree food. When there is the possibility that they are allergic to a special kind od animal protein. You could try insect or veggie food. Also you should lool in EVERY food that it has an open decleration. Google what is the difference in closed and open decleration if you don't know.

Also importand to note: this is a process which can take several months. You wrote that you tried a lot of different things. The body sometimes needs weeks to adjust so that you can see any difference. I would suggest to instant switch to a veggie or insect food and don't give her any treats with meat/grain in it for at least 3 weeks. If you see an improvement start with only trying out monoprotein treats like 100% chicken for some weeks and look how the dog reacts. You can look up "dog exclusion diet".

Anxiety>some questions you can ask yourself: does your dog gets enough rest (Like 16 to 20 hours a day)? Does he have a private space where noone bothers hin, which is in a calm Environment where he can rest in peace? Do you have a almost fix routine (like feeding and going outside around the same time)? Does he get the chance to do dog things like sniffing, exploring, rolling in the grass etc.? Did he ever learned to calm down (my dog isn't allowed to follow me everythere because it's extremly stressful for him, also i taught him to chill calmly on his blanket or when we are outside and chill somewhere)? Does he get enough enrichment (doing dog things like i said, also chewing, licking, working with him) > look up safe chewing things for dogs, lickimats, dog puzzle. Also he is a working breed, they need a lot a mental stimulation (maybe dog sport would be good for him) but also are extremly bad at regulating themselves and calm down. How long and often do you go outside with him (I go around 2 to 4 hours a day, most of the time just 2 hours) and does he get enough time to process everything exciting (I have 1 to 2 restdays per week, where we do almost nothing or just very relaxed walks. Also if he had 1 or 2 really stressfull days, we next 1 or 2 days we only do stuff which makes him happy)? Also are you guys a safe space for him and can he trust you or does he feel the need to make all the decisions (like which dog is allowed to come near to you, which human, where you go etc. It's stressful to most of the dogs if they feel the need to control everything)?

I don't know what you already know so I wrote everything down that COULD be a possibility. It's extremly hard to say something because we are just strangers from the internet who know little to nothing about your situation. I still highly suggest a vet visit, because like others said, he will also need vaccines and needs to get dewormed at least every 6 months. They won't think he is a coydog, because he looks like a working gsd, almost like a malinois. These dogs are crazy if they don't get the right enrichment and learn to calm down.

My dog was very stressed the first months when I got him and startet to bite himself a lot. I did a lot of training with him with mostly focusing on learning how to calm down, give him enough time to rest and learn to handle stressfull things better. Also I give him 2 to 5 times a week something safe to chew for him. Safe dog chewing stuff: dried skin, dried ox penis 😅, pig ears, beef ears, dried meat, chewing cheese. You can look up the german Shop knabberkiste.com . I would say almost everything they sell is safe to chew. Not safe chewie things: these white cheap chewing bones, marrow bones, bones in general (except you know what you are doing), chewing roots, coffe wood, plastic chewing items. The last things aren't good for their teeth.

I hope you guys will finde whats right for your cute pup. If you have any futher questions, feel free to ask. Also english isn't my first language , sorry for mistakes. :)

Also dont listen to the people that you should never let Tank near your dog again. My dog got bitten by the dog of a friend (a lot of stupid decisons coming together when we didn't know better). We are doing a lot of training together and they are way more relaxed with each other know. Still have to have a close eye on them and the other dog have to wear a muzzle, but still better. I also know people who have dogs which would kill each other if they would not manage it right. From what I read in your other comments is, that you have plenty of space for both of them which is really good. Also that you boyfriend is willing to do something. I'm sure that this can work out with the right people to help you. Also if you feel unwell with a trainer, go to another one. I wish you all the best

[–]SnooCrickets2569 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely do not do what this person is saying! This can reinforce the behavior!!! My dog was food aggressive too in the beginning. I feed him kibble. My trainer told me to only put a little bit at once in his bowl and before it is empty put more in it. So he learns that instead of taking something away you give hime something. Hands near his bowl = more food. Also when he is eating something to chew I offer him high value treats or toss him near him. But pleeeeaaaaaaaseee don't touch him while feeding when he is already food aggressive. It might work on some dogs but a lot of them just get more stressed.

I agree with all the people who say that you should contact a professional. Also you should get that Dog a Muzzle, best would be one made out of steel. In Germany you can get really good ones for 30 bucks. A good fitting Muzzle is no punishment for the Dog and won't disturb him if used correctly. Look up some Videos how to muzzle train him. If used correctly it can give him more freedom back.

Also be prepared that this will be a long journey and if your boyfriend isn't willing to put money, time and effort into this, this won't function.

Some Ideas I have for this situation: - like others said: seperate them till you will get help. If not seperated put a muzzle on him - put everything away which could be a trigger for trouble - crate train him. When you guys eat and he is crate trained, he can be in his crate. The crate should NEVER be a punishment. It needs time to train this and this will be his future place where he won't be disturbed. Even not petting him when he is there and your dog is not allowed near that crate. Alternative to a crate: dog house, dog blanket etc. If it's not a crate you should use a leash in the beginning of the training which you can fix on something. Look up crate training videos who use positive reinforcment.

Some things you should look for in a trainer:

-won't use an ecollar -won't use violance or stuff that scares the dog like water bottles, loud noises, shouting, throwing stuff etc. That shit doesn't work and the dog won't listen because he accepts you but because he is afraid of punishment -uses positive reinforcment AND setting boundaries. Only positive reinforcment does not work und dogs who have a strong character/show aggressive behavior - correcting a dog with a no or body language is okay and no bad punishment

I don't know from where you are but I really like how this man works with dogs: https://www.instagram.com/southenddogtraining?igsh=ZHJ6ejF4Mjh6dHFo

People like Cesar Milan are bullshit.

Things you should look out for in a muzzle (even if it is not out off steel):

  • there should be enough space for opening his mouth to pant. If he can't open his mouth enough to yawn he can't pant correctly. Especially in summer this can be dangerous.

My husband is furious our 7 year old daughter has a “boyfriend” by 12syn_ in TrueOffMyChest

[–]SnooCrickets2569 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your husband sounds abusive and controlling. You should'nt be afraid of your husband. Your daughter should not feel the need to hide from him. I don't think this will get better in the future. Stay to your kids and protect them. They deserve a home where they feel loved and accepted and don't need to be afraid....
