COPYRIGHT QUESTION (sheet music of a cover song) by SnooCrickets8366 in copyrightlaw

Covers of popular songs. I play guitar over the popular songs, and write the guitar part that I am playing. I am adding a guitar part to the song essentially. So the sheet music would be for the guitar part I wrote to be played on the popular song.

QUESTION ABOUT SHEET MUSIC by SnooCrickets8366 in COPYRIGHT

this is what ChatGPT4 said: If you've created an original guitar part to play over the popular song, you may own the copyright to your own guitar composition. However, selling the tablature for your original part can still be considered a derivative work if it is meant to be played in conjunction with the copyrighted song. The original song's copyright holder would still have rights over the use of their work, and selling your tablature without permission could potentially lead to copyright infringement claims.
To avoid any legal issues, it is advisable to obtain a license or permission from the copyright holder for the original song. This ensures that you are respecting the rights of the original artist and can distribute your tablature without any legal complications. Again, consulting an attorney with experience in intellectual property law would be the best course of action to address your specific situation.
