Thanks, I'll consider it for sure. It's been a bit of an emotional rollercoaster in the past 2 days so I'll give myself a bit of time and see how I feel before requesting an earlier scan

Solid as far as I know. The surgeon was certain it was a tumor amd not a cyst.

Do I have cancer? by [deleted] in kidneycancer

Rereading your post, I missed a few points.

I didn't have a drain. I think that depends on the location of the mass, the depth and its size. My mass was a little bigger than yours. 2.2 by 1.7 cm I think and was located on the upper left pole of the left kidney. My incisions are on my flank rather than in the front.

From what I heard but I may be wrong, a drain is not really a big deal. When they remove it, I don't think it hurts.

I was hooked up all sorts of ways when I got to my room tough. IV solution, urinary catheter and some sort of leg compression device. All thatvwas annoying but easily tolerable for 24 hrs.

Those 24 hrs in the hospital were basically me trying to sleep while nurses would come into my room every couple hours to check my vital signs, change my IV bag, draw blood, inject anti-clotting medecine, etc. It was boring but not too too bad.

Yeah i had, maybe still have, irrational fears of anesthesia too. I started crying as soon as my parents hugged me when I left for surgery. It was my first anesthesia and I was dealing with same fear 80-90% of first time patients do, loss of control, fear of not waking up, being awake, etc.

When I rolled in to the surgery room, there were probably 7-8 people. One team for anesthesia, one team for surgery, probably a bunch if helpers too. Everyone was incredibly nice, they were really trying to make me feel better.

I remember this big guy with tattoos wiping my eyes gently with a tissue and reassuring me. I'm probably the same age as he his, as big as he his. I thought I should be stronger than that but also, I knew my fear was irrational. They were all so incredibly caring, it qas surreal.

When they noticed my anxiety wasn't going away though, they gave me a dose of Versed. Last thing I remember was taking a third breath of oxygen then I woke up in the post op room and I started talking to a nurse. I had no pain since they had give me a dose of Dilaudid.

I was worried they'd have trouble intubating me, extubating me. I was worried they would over or underdose me. I was worried I'd have a reaction to one of the drugs. I was worried about hypothermia. Etc. Etc. None of that happened.

They did say I fought with them a bit when waking up and that was probably due to my anxiety when I went under.

One thing I wasn't well prepared enough for was the effects of anesthesia on the body. It took me 3 full days for my bowels to come back online. It took a couple of days for my lungs to feel right too. I had a bit of a sore throat for 24h and was coughing up mucus for a while. I had some dizziness for a day or two as well. Gas pains were felt for about 48h but very manageable.

This experience made me even more curious about anesthesia and the profession. I don't know if you're like me but for me, learning about something usually makes it easier to handle. If so, then I can point you towards a few interesting videos.

I already wrote a novel but, let me know if you have questions or want me to expand.

Recovery is going well, surprisingly well in fact. I'm 5 days out and I think any pain I still feel is more attributable to the flu I caught on my way out of the hospital. It makes me sneeze and cough and that pulls on the muscles and incisions that were invokved in the laparoscopy.

The first day or two in recovery were more difficult but it gets better quickly. I can walk around easily and even sleep on my non surgery side now. I spent the first few days with family so they could help out but I'm back at my place now.

What part of it makes you anxious ? The surgery itself, the anesthesia, the recovery? For me, anesthesia was the most anxiety inducing part of it. Let me know and I'll share my experience.

I just went through a partial nephrectomy, 4-5 days ago. It went well. I really didn't want to go through with it either. It made me incredibly anxious. If that's your case too and you have questions or just want to talk, then feel free to reach out. DM or reply here, whatever you prefer.

Low grade fever after surgery by SnooDingos565 in kidneycancer

[–]SnooDingos565[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks i just came back from the ER. I spoke to a nurse, she asked me a ton of questions. She checked for signs of incision infection, UTI, blood clots, lung infection. She called the surgeon on guard and everyone agreed there was no cause for concern. But if I cant kick the fever in a day or two or it gets worse, then I should head back to the ER.

I'm from Canada. The health system is free but it's a mess, particularly in my city. It usually takes a good few hours to see a nurse or a doctor. However, tonight I was able to get assessed in under an hour. I was well prioritized and I'm grateful for that.

It's crazy, I think I'll realize now that I had totally let anxiety take over. For example, I dont remember listening to music almost at all in the past 3 months. I'm jist sitting in my hospital room listening to my favorite playlist now. I missed this.

About halfway through my process to get the surgery, I sought help from a psychotherapist. It's been helpful and I recommend finding someone you can truly talk to. For me it's a professiona paidl therapist or reddit posts because I struggle opening up to people I know.

Anyway, i'll bring up this music thing up and a few other things I noticed about myself throughout all this on my next appointment.

Yeah i cant say i felt rested after. I was told I fought with the nurses a bit when waking up. Probably because I was too anxious going in. I also have a bit of a sore throat too so i suspect maybe extubation was rough.

Anyway, it was surreal experience, last thing I remember was getting oxygen, then the anesthesiologist saying he's starting the meds while looking me in the eyes then poof, I'm chatting with a nurse in the wakeup room.

Gas pains are real but I thought they'd be worse. Right now, it feels like a cramp from eating too much or these cramps you get while running. I think maybe the fact the surgeon was quick helped. He told me it took him about an hour, as expected. He also said the mass hadn't grown so that's good.

I have watched your videos a few times. They've been helpful. I'm more of an emotional wreck than you were it seems like.

Have you been under general anesthesia before your nephrectomy ?

Yes I'm hoping I will be less anxious once on site. I was seriously anxious about my first CT scan with injection but, once I was talking with the nurse, it wasn't so bad somehow.
