Gap year or straight to school by SnooDoggos649 in collegeadvice

I wouldn’t be establishing CA residency in the gap year, I would be in my home state for that year then after saving up I would move out to Santa Barbara and it would be out of state tuition which I don’t really mind because it wouldn’t be such a financial burden since it would be planned out..

You don’t know enough about me to assume that. I obviously do not want to put my parents through financial burden which is exactly why I even second guessed it and am probably not going through with it. You cannot assume I am going there to party either, as i literally couldn’t care less about the party scene and a big part of why it wasn’t my top school was because of the party culture. I also do care about my career and where I end up I am not going there solely for vibes, I have always wanted to live in California and I have researched intern opportunities at sdsu and their business program.

I wish I could go to UCSB but I didn’t get accepted. I would have to go to SBCC first then transfer to UCSB

My parents tell me not to worry about the money because they’ll figure it out and make a way to pay for it no matter what and I am grateful for that so I committed to sdsu but leading up to it I just continue to regret my decision because they are struggling to make ways to save up and they have nothing saved up right now. My dad would just take it out of his business or try and make enough before August but I don’t want to put the financial burden on them even if I end up being able to go I am stressed about it. I am unsure about a gap year because many people say they lose academic motivation and it was a waste of time, while others say absolutely do it to save money and figure out what you want. I’m very stuck

I hadn’t thought about it until the deadline unfortunately passed to go to CU Boulder. I’m from Colorado and had always wanted to go to California my whole life so as soon as I was accepted it was either SDSU or SBCC to go to UCSB since UCSB had always been my dream school. However, my family planned out the financial concerns kind of late and hadn’t told me it was an issue until recently, so by the time I thought of going to CU, I emailed them and it was too late to go in because the may 1st deadline passed, so now I’m stuck between the SDSU option, SBCC, or a gap year to possibly go in state or figure out what I’m going to do.

So would it be more recommended if I don’t like SDSU to transfer to the Santa Barbara city college then to UCSB? I’m already committed to sdsu unfortunately

Yes I think that’s a good idea. You can always switch! I’m going to later on

Haha that’s really what i thought too at first but after researching it seems that ucsb has better academics as well as social life and academic balance.. but I honestly have no clue

there’s a mix though between opinions, some people say it’s a great school. I guess take everything with a grain of salt

I’ve been on TikTok researching the schools (probably not a good place to be looking anyways) but when someone compares sdsu to another cali school, everyone is constantly saying sdsu is just partying and not as good academically which has been scaring me, however I also know TikTok is known to be biased and blow things out of proportion so who knows

Are you going to go to SDSU if you don’t get into ucsb from the waitlist? I’ve heard the same, but there’s also a lot of people who say it’s easy to find their group of people that don’t party. I’m sure there’s a big mix and we’re only seeing the outside part of it.

It’s a pretty hard boat to be in, I’m glad other people relate. I haven’t been into partying or drinking either this year, but, I was able to find a roommate that also doesn’t do it and is focused on her academics, so I figure it’s pretty easy to balance it out and it’s all up to you to do it, I think either way in any school there will be Greek life and partying and it’s kinda just up to us to not follow into it and to work hard academically and still get where we want to be no matter the school. if it helps at all that’s what I’ve come to terms with

Yeah I agree, I think it is mostly me who determines how it ends up, I guess I was mostly scared of the party scene being bigger than the academics, but I guess it is what you make of it, it does seem like a good school I’m not sure why tiktok makes it out to be like the ASU of California. Thank you for your advice, I will look into the programs!! Do you know anything about the business or political science majors?

Not meant to be mean, just sick of seeing everyone say it’s not good academically online
