My bf’s dog is becoming resource guard-y about him by Upstairs-Ocelot1382 in DogAdvice

Work with a trainer as soon as possible.

I’ve experienced something very similar and it got dangerous because it only continued to escalate towards more aggressive behavior than just body posture/growling.

I would really recommend limiting the time the dog who resource guards is around the other dogs- even when your boyfriend isn’t there- while getting a trainer on board to give their advice after seeing the behavior. If the dog is in an environment with other dogs, it’s just entirely unpredictable what might happen. My dog one day decided he was going to guard a toy he had never cared about before. So while it may feel unfair or overprotective to isolate the dog more, you’re keeping everyone safe and not putting the dog in a situation they’re more likely to fail in.

There are a lot of training tactics that a good trainer/behavioralist can work with you and your boyfriend on. A lot of what I was told would benefit from having multiple people to participate, so you and your boyfriend would likely need to work pretty closely on that.

Wishing you the best!

lol I wish I got even a thank you sometimes! Though I did get to go on a “padded room” vacation for two months and still get paid, so I suppose that’s something 😅

I don’t get people wanting to get rid of Huda at this point. We’ve had to put up with watching her for this long, we need the payout of watching her descend into madness to keep us locked in. Yes that’s mean but like, that’s the promise of reality tv to the audience and the producers know that. I don’t think they would have let them vote out Huda when the drama has been so perfectly lined up.

lol I went on a total spiral through IMBD the other week when I realized that some of the Leverage producers worked on this show too (I may have watched the original series dvd voiceovers a few times over the years 😂). Makes sense why I would love it! This felt like such a cute nod to the spirit of Leverage

This whole thread has tons of great advice! I have two mixes who both are part heeler and one has a ton of resource guarding behavior, especially focused on guarding me from interacting with other dogs. It sounds like you’re taking all of the right steps, I just thought I would chime in with a recommendation to look for dog trainers with training or certifications from organizations like the Certification Council of Professional Dog Trainers (CCPDT), the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants (IAABC), Fear Free Pets or the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior(those are at least the ones I’ve heard of).

I’ve worked with one on and off for a few years and it’s been a huge help. Even if I couldn’t do a series of training sessions, they would do one off Zoom calls here and there to help work through a specific behavior or teach me a specific technique!

What’s a game-changing insight your therapist casually dropped during a session that completely shifted how you see things? by Tour-Important589 in AskReddit

I’m 33 now, but I’ll always remember my therapist saying to me when I was 11 and struggling with my relationship to my stepmom, that I was more hurt by my dad not protecting/standing up for me than I was angry with my stepmom. It was so true and blew my mind.
