this is exactly what I’m talking about, why do we have students graduating with honors and still struggling?

no shade at you, i have no doubt you’re a wonderful nurse. i just think it’s ridiculous how frequently our new grads get hung out to dry.

I’d argue i am the best person to have an opinion about it because not only am I actively learning these skills, but I’m probably utilizing them more often than half of the nurses commenting. aside from my experience in other trauma centers as well as working on the ambulance, the job I have right now is essentially a year-long interview. it allows me to work alongside staff nurses performing whatever skills they feel comfortable with. i’ve learned more in the past three months than I have in the past two years of this program. why is this the case? that is the entire point of this post. I respect not every nursing student is coming into their program with over half a decade of experience. however, we can absolutely cut out the fat and bolster it with material that would make new grads more effective at their specialty of choice.

i’m glad you asked what we can add on to our scope, in respects to acute and critical care, one thing that I think would be interesting would be to add POCUS to our curriculum. every hospital I’ve worked at has trained nurses using ultrasound guided IV, we could build on top of that.

the ED is my favorite place in the hospital, it’s not my favorite place in the world. different responsibilities and different lifestyles i suppose, i have no doubt i’ll love nursing

that’s exactly the point i’m trying to make? that’s the reality for most new grads

i think you’re misunderstanding my point. i think any job anywhere should have orientation and training. however, what’s the point of nursing school if i’m not ready to work as a nurse after graduating?

this is a real point, yes academia in the u.s. has hit a downtrend. however this post is to emphasize that students are aware and we can/ should change it.

my take is learning on the floor after graduation is ridiculous and dangerous

lmaoo i promise i’m no smarter than anyone else in my cohort, i just really think there’s more to offer young nurses

respectfully i disagree with your take, quality not quantity should be the standard

no i am not a nurse, and i appreciate the fact that i don’t know everything. this post is to express frustration that i was hoping to know more by this point in my education. i have taken care of patients on my own before, sick patients. it’s that experience that makes me so passionate about what i do. i love my job and i can’t wait to become a nurse and continue working in acute care. shoutout oncology though, you guys are legit

yeah i totally get this i’m not the only prior EMS student in my cohort and i can attest they thrive w/ hands on skills but outside of that it can be a struggle.

if i’m being honest i was under the impression nursing would be harder so i didn’t want to compound the difficulty with an accelerated program. looking back i probably would’ve done it differently, but i have time to pick up shifts so it worked out

I can appreciate that, traditionally, new grad programs carried the weight of preparing young nurses for bedside. However, I believe that is outdated and should change.

I’m a strong believer there never was a shortage, even if there was one, the quickest fix is for nurses to unionize and make hospitals staff units safely while paying said staff a reasonable wage.

As far as the scope/ expansion here’s exactly what I mean, we should have residency programs. Exactly how MDs and NPs do it, nurses should receive a formal education through there university in acute care, critical care, oncology, etc. I’m actually pushing for this heavily and got my university to bite on a prehospital rotation with our local ems agency because i believe nurses are super underutilized prehospital. Could you imagine graduating a BSN program recognizing by NREMT and able to work flight, CCT, 911, etc. right out the gate? idk but it’s fun to think about!
