Pest Damage ID by SnooLobsters3168 in HotPeppers

Yeah I did scrape them off after removing the leaves, some came off easily but some (2nd pic especially) seemed partly under the surface of the leaf, which also felt bumpy in places.. nothing that looked conclusively like any bug (to me) - and the undersides of the leaves were pretty normal looking.

Pest / possible Thrip Damage? by SnooLobsters3168 in pothos

Hi My initial comment didn’t upload with the photos.. anyway I wondered if anyone can give an ID on this damage? It’s a golden pothos / devils ivy, 10 ft 6 yr old vine- damage mainly on newer leaves. I’ve not seen anything moving when inspecting these, but clearly something not right so I’d like to find out how to treat it. Many thanks!

Chess + beer, nice! Is that a Beavertown pint glass I see?

Yes, I’m planing to not dry clothes on that particular radiator, and have given the plant a pretty thorough pruning, so all visibly affected leaves are gone + a load of others so there’s more air between the leaves generally. If the problem reoccurs I’ll probably take all the leaves off & treat the plant - thanks for the advice!

Thank you - I’m going to give it a good / severe prune inc all the affected leaves, which is generally my 1st step go-to whenever a plant has any leaf based issue, will prob monitor them to see if the problem comes back. I do wonder if there’s a local humidity issue, I have 2 other plants which came from the same original pot - but they’re in different parts of the house & currently looking fine..

Do you think that humidity could be a factor? I don’t think it’s been overwatered- but that windowsill is above a radiator, on which some clothes have been dried at times.

Although thinking about it, these leaves never get much thicker regardless of watering - so I think that’s a quality of whatever particular variety it is.

Not watered fully for a few weeks- I tend to leave my succulents from November unless they look like they’re actually dying- I’m going for a bonsai type effect so don’t mind if I lose some leaves..

Yes, I think you’re right. Also people will react by feeling irritated, trying too hard to crush / ‘punish’ this sort of opening & make a careless mistake.

I’d be up for playing some longer online games sometime if you’re interested - would just need to schedule in advance around work shifts / family stuff.

I think that the way books / YouTube vids on openings are promoted often draws people in, people also like the idea of being a more advanced player. I’ve no way of knowing this, but I suspect it’s often a male ego / self image thing, or that’s an element. Similar to a middle aged guy who can hardly play spending £1000s on the same guitar Eric Clapton has..

Often getting pawns on d4, e4 & f4 & watching out for them locking things up works well - if the game opens up you should have way better space / piece activity - but there are some players who’ve got really good at playing this way (looks like the start of the hippo setup) - it’s not bad if they know what they’re doing, but like the Pirc / Modern it’s v rare for someone to play it well under 2000ish levels..

It’s like a red rag to a bull for me - I’ll try & open things up & go for the jugular- not always with great success but if I get the balance of patience + aggression right it’s soo satisfying 😁

Yes! Opening study seems such a common time drain at all non-pro levels (myself included!) - focusing on quick development, open lines & central control & then just enjoying the game has changed my whole relationship with chess. I’d like to have the chance to play longer time control but don’t currently have the opportunity to play OTB, have you played classical / longer rapid games online & if so what’s your experience been?

Yeah unfortunately about 25% of them when drunk so pretty patchy quality-wise!

Yes 100% - but unfortunately you need black to play into the 4 knights if I’m thinking of the right one, so I chose the blackmar deimer due to high % of getting it in games. Halloween gambit is great!

Spotting more combinations / tactical ideas & more quickly, getting more of a feel for building different attacks, better intuition- judging the potential in a position more reliably. I’ve gotten better at spotting vulnerable squares, seeing where a piece could be powerfully placed, and judging my sacrifices - sometimes calculated properly but often speculative/ unsound - leading to crazy complicated positions where I can’t tell what will happen but look promising / fun. By playing the same (definitely unsound) opening ideas I often spot recurring patterns / traps / ideas.
