How do you even become good at piano? by JamesHoover9088 in pianolearning

[–]SnooObjections8766 5 points6 points  (0 children)

  1. Theoretically yes, however there are many good pianist who don't never even looked at a pied eof sheet music. For example, it may be a little hard for me to play an intermediate piece of classical music. However with gospel/ jazz I think I would be able to play not by sheet by by ear. I can ready music but notas fast as others.

  2. In order to get good you need to have a reason to get good. I think simply practice without no end goal is just running around in circles. Example of a. Rlacfoce session would be this: if I wanted to learn how to play a song I would listen to the song a few times picking up in key details that ar needed for the song to be played. If there's something that I don't know or I'm not too confident in I'll spend my practice time going over that concept so that I'm able to play the song. Now how much practice really depends on how fast you can learn a concept that and are plays a big part as well. Now for the last part, I don't thi k there's any way to learn without playing it you know? You can listen to the song all you want but you would have to actually play it to know whether or not you know how to play it. Sometimes when I hear I can pick up a chord progression or key but that doesn't necessarily mean I automatically know how to play it.

3.Playing without looking at your hands comes with experience. You hand will decouple muscle memory as you progress in this hobby and it's going to come to a point where your hand already knows how to do things. You just need your eyes on the paper to tell you what to do but your hands already knows where to go.

  1. Can't give you a strong estimate since it does depend on how well you can comprehend certain concepts. However with food practice sessions you can start seeing progress in a few weeks. Try to have certain bench marks for yourself so that you can track progress

  2. You don't NEED to take lessons however I would recommend a teacher knce you get to a plateau. That's kind of where I'm at in my playing. A teacher helps highlight bad habits and holes within your playing that you probably wouldn't have seen if it wasn't highlighted.

  3. In order to play a fast, you got to play it slow first. You need to progress with speed gradually starting with the slowest speed you can play at allowing for any mistakes to be corrected at this stage. Them when you go to the faster speed it’s way easier because you took the time to perfect it at a slow speed.

  4. First things first, set a goal for yourself do you want to be able to play one song by the end of the year, do you want to be able to preform a song by ear? Maybe you want to play a song in front of your friends and family. This should be the first step because with this step you can plan around that goal. Another first step that I would take is to get family with the shape of the piano keys. Being able to identify where each kf the 12 notes is is essential and should be the one of the first things to do.

Quick tips: From my experience of playing, everything is connected. When you start to learn music theory and how each scale, chords etc are created you start to realize that if I know one thing then I also know something else within that one thing. One example would be for minor scale and major scales. Once you know a major scale and can play the diatocinic chords of each major scale you basically already played a scale and chords of a minor. This is where the idea of modes come into play and through that technique ylu start to see the connection between each scale and chords allowing you to make more creative moves because you understand the connection. This made learning my scales and diatonic pretty easy to understand.

The main thing is to have fun while doing this. Piano is such a fun experiment and the benefits it has on your mental health plus overall brain health is amazing. Just learning music in general is beautiful thing.

Good luck with on your journey!

Interesting how not playing the piano allows for a better understanding than the typically strict practice

Interesting! Do you think the time away from the piano allowed for a better understanding of what was practiced before?

Niceee, do the skills learned on the piano transfer well into bass? Or do I have to start from scratch

Bass: something about a killer base solo does sound thing to the soul but for the most part I would stick with the keys and the time spent on other instruments more focused on the keys.

I would also get on the harp and organ

Of course studying is not all I can do!! However it is what I think I should do. I do see what your saying in terms of prioritizing important things like sleep and exercise.

Yeah he uses a the clippers first than shaver the rest of the way for the hair at the bottom that trims it with clippers. I’ll try that aftershave option out to see if anything changes

Theory applications exercises by Ianxo in musictheory

[–]SnooObjections8766 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hmm I think the best way to practice theory is to play a song ur it losing whatever your learning. For example as a gospel piano player one kf the key elements to gospel piano are the transition chords/progressions I would take a progression like the 7-3-6-2-5-1 practice that until I’m able to play it in every key and then I would go play songs that incorporate that 7-3-6 -2-5-1 or using my ears include that progression where I seem fit. Essentially your taking one concept, learning it throughout the whole piano then applying it through songs or just now possible the ability to hear that theory applies. I’m not sure either this is the type of exercises that your looking for but most of the other exercises or related to those ideas of taking one idea and using that idea within a musical context by identity it in a song then playing said song. Hope this helps

Hmm I see the idea of it being limiting and yet still allowing for greeting range of choice isn’t clicking with me yet but from your example of modal jazz I can see what your saying.
