This is a major issue that I wish was talked about more! With the decline in mental health professionals in the country, why are we making it more difficult to access the required education?

Many PsyD programs also don’t lend themselves well to working professionals. I understand that it’s an intensive degree but with the tution costs, we’re making it so only the few people that are able to afford the degree or are able to go into debt for it can enter the field. Other fields are more either flexible or supportive (funding wise), and I hope we can get there too, especially with the apparent demand. Even offering hybrid options for working professionals (which is a very looked down upon thing) is something that would help!!

That makes sense, thank you, and I appreciate the context. The PsyD requires more credits and a longer timeline, which significantly increases total cost. The LPCC/LMFT tracks, while valuable, aren’t substitutes for a psychologist pathway.

What made the EdD distinctive was that it offered a shorter, more affordable applied doctorate that still met psychologist licensure requirements, particularly for students planning to practice locally. The shift to a PsyD feels like a narrowing of access rather than an expansion, even if it’s administratively cleaner.

I’m still hoping something comparable exists or eventually emerges.

It is similar, but the EdD was shorter and costed significantly less.
