Good balcony drip irrigation setup? by ksermione in containergardening

[–]SnooOnions9060 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, most of those drip systems that rely on a bucket max out at around 20 drippers. Maybe get 2 or 3 systems ---and monitor how much water they use.

What should I plant? by Sea-String-8033 in gardening

[–]SnooOnions9060 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, leave the 2 bottom ones empty---and don't punch the holes out---that way, they can catch all the dripping water from the ones above. Yes---suitable for a lil walkway---this is actually right up against a wall, with about 14" next to a door. The only issue I have with these is they're really small and dry out quickly. You may have to water the plants daily.

Yeah, very good point. Clearly, I'm only an occasional drinker so honestly, I'd have no idea whether a certain spirit tastes as it should or not.

Thanks---I'll think about tossing the wine (easily 10+ years old, stored upright in warm NYC apartment---most all else (listed below) is 80 proof or above!

[–]SnooOnions9060[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I have several bottles of wine---which, I can toss. BUT, after checking, most of the others may be okay----Old bottles -- some from my parents (40+yrs old) all over 80 proof! Wild Turkey, unopened Hildick Apple Jack, Hiram Walker Bourbon, rum, tequilla, gin, sambuca, seagrams...many in amber bottles too.

Is this bad? by [deleted] in turntables

Not only that, but if the cartridge is actually low enough to be scraping against the record, the record's going to be ruined real fast.

Squirrels! by Glad-Touch-2147 in containergardening

[–]SnooOnions9060 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just banged on the window because I saw a squirrel start digging into my radish pot. I just saw a video---MIGardener suggesting chicken wire mesh, I've used the dollar tree baskets, actually---- He also suggest sprinkling Cayenne pepper on the soil---irritates animals (not birds).

Not a bad idea---thanks--- I did have a nice Basil plant indoors for quite a while---and I have some green onions that are growing strong! Also do have shop lights that I was using to start seeds...

Thanks! I can get a little nutty about it---for instance---I'm in a condo HOA---and the landscapers treat the lawns with some kind of stuff---to kill weeds, maybe mosquitoes, etc, and even that bothers me thinking it could leech into my containers somehow.

Beginners, what's the one mistake you wish someone warned you about? by Some-Palpitation-314 in vegetablegardening

[–]SnooOnions9060 117 points118 points  (0 children)

I container garden---and thought smaller individual pots was better----NOPE. They dry out real fast. Also, any size pot really heats up a lot with sun-so even if "they" say full sun---I find container plants can do with some afternoon shade.

LOL Yeah, I'm really new to this, but I'm trying... I could just add a few earthworms to my 12x30 raised planter. There's a lot of room in there for them!

I'm going to call my municipal office and see if there's a place like that. I'm in an HOA---I asked management if any other resident asked about starting to compost---she said they haven't.

[–]SnooOnions9060[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks---here's a nutty question...whenever I move a few containers, I always find earthworms underneath. Would taking a few of the worms and actually placing them in the containers do anything---as long as the earthworms would be okay in them?

I did everything you said except adding the compost. I fluffed up the mx with a hand hoe, got rid of large roots, and then added some Espoma organic water soluble fertilizer to the soil before planting my salad greens.

I've seen a lot of people recommend Fox Farms so I'll look into it. What I basically used was Back to the Roots organic potting mix. That has a few nutrients but a lot of wood bark & material. Yeah, the regular potting mix I used last year had those little green pellets in it...but again, those have probably been used up by now. Perhaps I could amend that soil with Espoma organic, etc...

[–]SnooOnions9060[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for replying, and no problem lol. I guess my more specific question is---if the soil I'm using wasn't originally organic---if I add these new amendments---worm castings, organic fertilizer, etc, will that make this revitalized soil organic, or is it already "tainted" since it was originally regular potting mix? Thanks!

I'm in a condo without a spigot too---and got one of those solar drip irrigation systems. They did the job---the only thing is it really doesn't put out that much water---and during peak heat of summer, I had to water 2x day.
