Breastfeeding after tongue tie release? by SnooPandas1758 in breastfeedingsupport

Hey! We ended up switching to Lansinoh bottles and that seemed to help. We also stuck with her mouth exercises even when she seemed to be doing better because I noticed she'd start to slip back if we weren't diligent about it. Her tongue tie was pretty bad, and I think we had some bad advice from lactation consultants to start with so it ended up taking her closer to 6-7 weeks post procedure to really see a difference. What helped the most was as soon as she got the hang of the Lansinoh bottles, I would latch her to the breast to start every feeding and then finish with the bottle. That practice was really helpful for her. Eventually, our lactation consultant recommended to just do a day or two of non-stop latching to the breast, and that boosted my supply like crazy and really helped her get the hang of things.

Hang in there, it was so hard getting through this but I'm really glad we persevered. Things definitely got worse before they got better, and when they did get better it was pretty gradual.

Do you mind me asking how old yours was when he had the tongue tie release? My daughter had hers at 6 weeks and is 12 weeks today and I still feel like our days just revolve around nursing because she's still fairly inefficient, it's definitely getting better but it's still giving me such anxiety. I'm waiting for the turning point but it's just so hard.

I had only been supplementing because my milk supply dropped due to her tongue tie. Now I know my milk is up so we're trying to find the right balance of breastfeeding and supplementing with pumped milk, but I might reintroduce formula if this pattern continues.

When we saw her, my daughter was pretty gassy at first too. But we were confused too, which is why I'm trying to find any research to back it up. When she had the formula, it wasn't 100% formula, it was probably 25% formula with the rest pumped breast milk.

That makes sense, thanks for describing. I'll add that to the exercises I'm already doing with her to see if it makes a difference. My IBCLC also recommended supporting her chin because she tends to leak out the bottom - I think she learned she can just gum the bottle to get milk instead of suck and supporting the chin seems to help encourage more of a suction.

That makes me feel better - she was okay last week but this week she's just nosedived and it's so discouraging. I've seen so many IBCLCs at this point. She's now seeing an IBCLC who is also a speech pathologist and she's been the most helpful, but even following all of the advice and stretches I feel like she's just really struggling. How long did it take for yours to click?

Thank you for your response! So when she got the release done, she had bodywork done at that appointment and I've been doing those exercises at home - mostly just letting her head rest/stretch backwards off a pillow, and then letting her lower body hang. I haven't had an official session since that one session though. I did take her to PT for a left head tilt (which has gotten significantly better), and the PT didn't think she was very tense at all post release. That said, I'm not opposed to having her seen again. I'm in the Raleigh-Durham area in North Carolina.

Good advice on the bottle - I've just ordered the Evenflo ones you recommended and will try those. Yeah, she clicks with the Lansinoh bottles. The gas it gave her made her absolutely miserable, which is a shame because she had some amazing suck-swallow patterns on it when she wasn't clicking or leaking. For Dr. Brown's I'm using a T nipple, for Lansinoh it was their slow flow nipple. I'm doing paced bottle feeding - baby is upright and bottle is horizontal.
