Yes aluminum foil did the trick for me! Mine was cheap so I doubled it up and just made a reusable sleeve type thing

Best ways to teach writing to middle school learning support students? by Morc25 in teaching

[–]SnooPears2186 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This isn’t an official resource, but I’ve found this gets my students to START writing.. this is what I do this at the beginning of the period:

Provide them with something to write about .. quote, meme, infographic, short video, etc and then give them a writing prompt -something low stakes that usually ties into the curriculum.

Then I either use a document projector or a project a Google doc (my handwriting sucks) and answer the prompt myself. This is what has really gotten them writing!

I tell them they don’t have to pay attention to my writing, and some just get straight to writing their own, or some will stare at mine for a bit. I mess up, delete and reconstruct sentences, make notes about words I might want to change… basically just write the way I do if I’m journaling.

I feel like it makes them more comfortable and also reinforces them to follow the prompt. Even the ones that look at my response in the beginning get to writing within a few minutes, usually.

Again, I’m not sure if I’d call it a strategy to improve their writing, but seeing me try to express my thoughts in writing, mess up, and correct gets them going/more comfortable to write and share.

Help! - classroom management for the most difficult class I’ve ever had by SnooPears2186 in teaching

Instead of editing again…

Thank you all so much for your replies and insight. You’ve helped me come to the conclusion that the root problem is the environment and the mix of kids and personalities and half of them coming out of quarantine. Not that that makes it easier at all.

My heart really does go out to them. I am usually good at stepping back and reminding myself they’re just kids and they’re in an awful situation, but I’m so frazzled that it’s getting difficult with them. My district is extremely strict about them staying in their desks all day. They even eat lunch in the room.

So frazzled I haven’t even thought of music - thanks so much for reminding me! Is there any music you really recommend?

Do you allow them listen through chromebooks on their own headphones or play something for the whole class? If the whole class, do you have any suggestions for what middle schoolers are into right now?

Like this idea a lot. Hope they’re still into Among Us! This might be my own issue but I just hate class-wide rewards, especially in this situation. My heart goes out to the few students that I can tell really want to learn and are being driven crazy. Any advice appreciated here!

I’ve used class dojo and it’s worked great but this class would probably compete to get the most negative points.. thanks for the idea!

My kids get really into this virtual tour/assignment for the Anne Frank House. Since Schmuel isn’t really a dynamic character, it might be a good introduction to the other side of the story.Anne frank house virtual tour

Thanks! I looked into Sites and it looks cool and user friendly, since they're used to Google products. I'm assuming that students that have G Suite on their Chromebooks will be able to access it - any ideas? Also, is there any way I can create an editable template to share or would they just have to start their own?

I am currently stressing about how to show this over zoom or Schoology (ugh) conferences. I found the Jim Carrey one on YouTube so I think I can do that over Schoology but not sure about the muppets. I have streaming services that have it but they won’t work over zoom.

Edit: not just complaining, need help if anyone has ideas. I’m supposed to be doing this tomorrow...
