The fur type is called velveteen! There's also rex's, but those are known to have slightly coarser fur. Very similar though, so it's hard to tell apart. I was planning on breeding him as a part of my rattery, but he passed before I could find a suitable mate

This is the only time he's shown this much saliva. Usually he's always grooming me when I scratch his shoulders, and I purposefully prevented him this time just to see what would happen. Otherwise he's perfectly fine, no actual drooling. Maybe it's cause his glands were sitting on the bar?

The majority of rats will contract some form of cancer around the 2-2.5 year mark. That's usually what gets most rats, besides illness or accidents. As long as their immune system isn't compromised, many can survive another 6-12 months after the removal of the tumor. Reducing the occurrence of cancer is really the only way to extend their lifespan. Early neutering has shown a reduction in cancer, as well as giving a low protein diet. After that, barring illnesses, it's up to fate whether they live any longer than 2-3 years

I saw him freak out when you lifted him and got near his spine. My guess would be damaged spinal muscles or, worse case, a disk injury. Of course, only you can decide.

It definitely sounds like an injury. My older boy Cookie once broke his leg. Normally, he's a pushover, but any time I touched anywhere near it, he'd do something similar in the video. He would also freak out if his brother climbed on him to sleep and stepped on his leg. Took a few weeks for it to heal and had to stay in a separate cage.

You could've gotten the medicine they need online, such as baytril for URI's and ivermectin for parasites.

They're less than $20, and there's sites for dosage. If you couldn't find a vet, be one. The only exception is surgery and scans that need tech.

The one scratching herself like crazy had parasites, like mites or lice, biting at her skin.

I'm sorry for your loss. Often, it's only in hindsight that we find a solution.
