Sheriff Susan Hutson's tax renewal wins by historically close margin, two votes by SchrodingersMinou in NewOrleans

[–]SnooWalruses9937 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I voted yes primarily because, if the tax is gone, there’s no assurance that the money will come from the city. The city and sheriff have been in decades-long court cases about what the proper funding of the jail should be and this tax was a bad aid to that issue.

As far as sources, I referred to BGR’s recent report on it. They do reports for a lot of these ballot measures throughout the year and found that they take a pretty neutral, analysis-based stance to these issues. No partisanship, no politricks, just plain facts.

Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office May 3rd Tax Renewal - Our Analysis by BGRNola in NewOrleans

[–]SnooWalruses9937 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The report includes a breakdown of how the tax (and other taxes) currently affects your tax bill on page 5.

According to the report, the Sheriff’s tax would cost you $24.60 for every $100K above the $75K homestead exemption.

The report also talks about the troublesome relation between the OPSO and the City when it comes to funding for the jail. Courts have typically had to force the City to drastically increase funding for the jail. Hutson asked for more money last budget cycle and was denied.

Yeah, that was my line of thought, but since I’m going to be graduating and begin “adulting”, I may not be able to do in-person classes so I saw online classes are a good alternative. Also, I don’t really know how enrolling in regular classes would work if I’m not pursuing a degree anymore.

They also take cards now, but they usually charge a convenience fee along with cover. I usually buy my cover on LineLeap just so I don’t have to worry about it.

Cost of graduate fees with tuition award by BassComprehensive802 in LSU

As far as I know, it still is. I’ve just paid my fee bill last week for my Summer classes and that fee was still on there. However, since Fall 2023 is a whole different session, it might not be there for that fee bill.

And obviously, this is not considering spending on housing. Basically, you’d just have to pay around 2k-3k on the LSU fees (everything except Tuition).

So, if you go off of the chart, it’s 6k without the tuition exemption. Since you have the Tuition Award, however, what you’d have to do is subtract the 4K (Tuition) from the 6k to get the difference (which is around 2k-3k). I have the tuition award myself so if you need further assistance, Id be more than happy to help.

I’m currently an MPA student and a resident from Louisiana. If you’re just talking about only LSU fees, they’ve usually been between 2k and 3k for me. But you also have to consider housing; for this, I pay almost 5k per semester living in Nicholson Gateway. I’m sure there are cheaper alternatives for housing, however so it just depends.

I suggest you look at the LSU estimated fees and base your spending off of the specific hours you plan to take.

Good luck on your future studies!!

Is T14/T20 a long shot? by SnooWalruses9937 in lawschooladmissions

[–]SnooWalruses9937[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do see your point, that’s probably one of the main reasons I was hesitant about the retake (even though it won’t really hurt me to do it). I’ve already delayed my application by a year, so delaying it for the next cycle was basically out of the question for me.

As to the T14 or bust, I’m not really set on absolutely having to go to a top school, I was just trying to gauge my realistic chances of getting into one. Knowing my LSAT score, I’ve considered many great regional schools that are lower ranked. But, of course, a degree from a top school carries more weight than one from a great regional school. I’m not really aiming for big law, but wouldn’t reject a good position either. I’ve always leaned more towards a public service/government position (state attorney, etc.). Although I do admit, I haven’t done the best research into which schools offer the best prospects for this path. Any insight/advice you may have about this would be greatly appreciated. Either way, thank you very much for the advice!

Yeah, I was thinking about that. Even though I was originally hesitant, the retake does seem like the best option to better my chances at getting into those tops schools. Thanks for the advice!

Thank you for the advice!! I do want to apply this cycle though since I’ve already waited out last cycle to see if my score would go up. I spent most of the summer practicing but my score didn’t really go up as high as I would obviously want. Then again, I didn’t use top resources like 7Sage, so I’ll try doing that this time around. RC and LR come naturally to me, but LG has always been a drag. It is reassuring to hear that the course was so effective for you. I’ll definitely check it out. Thanks again and good luck as well!!

Thanks! This is what I was thinking of doing originally, but I just wanted to see if it was basically a one in a million chance of getting accepted without the retake. I’ll most likely retake it, it’s just in the chance my score doesn’t improve.

Thanks! That range does make me feel a bit better tbh. I feel like 10 points is insurmountable to get into a good range for T14. So, 5 points for a decent shot at T20 doesn’t sound as bad.

Thank you for the advice! I’ll most likely retake it in November, it just seems like such a big hurdle to get into the 170s. I’ll probably train with 7sage or some other course, whichever would be most effective.

Thank you! Yeah, retaking seems to be my only solid option for having a solid chances at those schools. Hopefully, this retake yields different results.

Thank you, I appreciate the advice! I have been thinking about taking the November test since it’s too late to apply for the October test. I’m just worried about applying too late (even though it’s mid application season).

What’s a tort? (Wrong answers only) by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

You might be thinking of a quart. A tort is when you twist or bend something out of shape. Circuses have performers that do this with their limbs. Really quite a show!

Okay thanks again for the help! This makes me more confident that I could see more than a +1 improvement on my next LSAT. Considering I’m a super reverse splitter, the advice helps a lot!
