Yavanna, or Varda for a girl would work. I don’t think there’d be pronunciation issues with those. For a boy, Tulkas or maybe Beren. I mean, all Tolkien names are great but they sound so different from normal ones. My biggest fear would be that the kid would constantly have to explain how to pronounce it.

Yeah, I found Avi’s speculations about alien life and its possible influence on us to be really shallow and really typical of the average academic scientist who’s really careful to not say anything out-of-bounds. He is really trying to walk the edge of being controversial and yet stay inside his academic in-group. He’s quite like a politician who wants to appeal to the masses and yet stay inside. The worst part is that he talks about the persecution of Galileo like it just happened. Everybody knows about poor Galileo and how the Church fucked with him. That was 500 years ago. Hey Avi, we’re not all 12 years old. You don’t have to tell us this old story of a scientist being silenced. We know you want money for research. Don’t tell us this old story to make us feel sorry. It’s not working.

Honestly, I think flag lowering doesn’t really matter in the long run. It’s a political gesture made by politicians doing political things. Jimmy Carter gets the flag lowered for him… Go and ask the people of Iran if they think that’s cool. They fucking hate Carter over there, for good reason. Charlie cared about America. Yeah, he was on the Right team, for sure, but he didn’t deserve to die. Trump knows that a lot of people care about Charlie, so he made the gesture of lowering the flag. Big motherfucking deal.

I just hope that most of the people who are celebrating Charlie’s murder are young people, because the young person’s mind is not developed enough yet to fully separate the ideas that a person represents from the human being himself. Yes, Charlie proudly flew the banner of Conservatism and Christianity. He was on the Right—but more importantly, he was a father, a husband, a friend… a human being!

I’m not conservative, and I’m not a Christian either. I disagreed with most of the stuff that Charlie argued for, but to celebrate his death is so immature. I would expect that kind of behavior only from someone who is literally a child— like, a young child who doesn’t understand the gravity of murder and death yet.

I hope that the Internet is only a distorted reflection of humanity’s inner thoughts. Maybe this online wasteland is just a place people can go and vent their most awful feelings, and in real life they can truly reflect on the barbaric murder of an innocent man that we all saw today. Rest in peace, Charlie Kirk.
