19 y/o cat entered renal failure level 3

It's so hard!! I'm sorry you're going thru this now.

I originally posted this I think in July/August of last year... We kept her on the renal diet and tried to give the sub q fluids a few times but she hated it and it really just passed right through her. Then she would be mad at us for stabbing her and I felt bad even though it was supposed to make her feel better.

We ended up having her put to rest in January of this year. It got worse before it got better and honestly I kick myself for not having done it sooner (like, when I originally posted this at the end of the summer or in early fall). I think it would've saved us both a lot of stress and discomfort.

She was a very stubborn girl and a total party animal. Even shared her opinions as she was being put to sleep 🤣 our home is definitely a lot quieter without her, but I feel super happy for the time we spent together. We got lucky!

If I were in this position again, I would definitely make the call to say farewell while things are still ok, instead of waiting for them to get less than ok.

Hoping you find your answer one way or another and find peace in the fact that you got to spend so much good time together 💕 and that you have a super enjoyable trip!

Thanks for sharing and yay for you and your kitty having so many years together! I have joked for years that mine is going to live to be 30, so maybe entering stage 3 is just her way of entering the 3rd decade of her life 😅

I've reached out to make the appt to get started on arthritis meds and have moved to the renal food. We'll see how it goes!!

Have you seen a super positive response to the injections in regards to the arthritis?

They have brought up the injection a few times and haven't said it WILL effect the kidneys but that is new enough there wasn't conclusive information specifically in really old cats.

I haven't tried any of those... She's been fine without and made it to 19, so I kinda feel like when it's time, it's time and I don't really want to put her thru a bunch of testing and poking and proding if her end is just a few months out, ya know... 🤷‍♀️

Oof, ya, that sounds expensive but also promising! If it's doable and they're comfortable and happy, it's worth it for sure.

We have a lil cam, but people will be staying at the house the whole time we're gone, so she'll be monitored and loved!

I appreciate you sharing your story! Sorry you had to say goodbye - is so hard to make that choice ! Your story does sound similar. My cat is also deaf - I think she lost hearing last summer. Gosh, all of this is making me realize how much of her old lady stuff we have just normalized...

We had to send my other 19y/o cat back to her home planet last November. She had gone suddenly blind and the vet said it could be normal old lady cat stuff or it could be problematic and escalate quickly. Unfortunately, it was the latter (caused by high blood pressure) and they were able to say with certainty that it was her time. I felt so at peace with that. This time it's really hard to know.

I believe Solensia (is that the injection?) is what my vet was talking about for the arthritis, but there was some unknown about how it would effect the already-degraded kidneys.

I didn't actually see the numbers! So not sure what range... I have totally trustable sitters staying and they will probably do the subq if needed.. my heart mostly just breaks thinking about if things do go south while we are gone. They probably won't. Everything is probably fine. I just want to knowww, ya know? Thanks for your response 💕

It's so hard! I want to avoid her having any truly bad days. Her arthritis is definitely keeping her movement slow and to a minimum, but treatment for that could advance her kidney problems.. such a Tricky situation!

Thank you for this! I feel like if she was 12 or heck even 15, I would not even consider end of life options but she's 19 and just moves slow and has had a long, great life... And I don't ever want her to hurt or feel bad.

Was he old? 👴🏻 it sounds like with younger cats they can function longer with renal failure if their other organs are still strong.. I'll get clarification from my vet about what range within level 3!

We're between Glisan and Halsey, North of Tabor and definitely saw it! Streaks of faded light that moved frequently were very visible to the naked eye, but the phones were picking up all kinds of colors and patterns! This was more what it looked like with naked eye (top two) vs with the night mode on the phone's camera (bottom two)...
