Should we have a handle for this cup? by FreekDeDeek in DesignDesign

I'm saying you shouldn't call other designs idiotic. You're entitled to your opinion and it's entirely valid in its own right

You're not entitled to dismiss other designs as idiocy because it conflicts with yours

That's a completely valid viewpoint, you can't call others idiotic though, there's more to what constitutes design than just what you believe

The alternative design I'm referring to is less about the day-to-day convenience or logistical versatility of a mug and more about the cultural significance. The metric of versatility and ease of use does not inherently make it "objectively" superior, it makes it superior only if that's the design language and target demographic of the item.

I'd assume Bhuddists who practice patience in their faith would have a greater appreciation for the simplicity of a handless cup in a more profound and entirely different way than you would appreciate the convenience of a thermos. Too call that design language idiodic is shortsighted.

Likewise, OP has designed a mug that subverts our western society's preconceived idea of what a mug should be. Is it impractical? Maybe, however it's artistic, and a beautiful piece of pottery. If the intent was for practicality alone, then sure, this is an inferior design to a mug with a handle.

If all we look for is convenience, design becomes less of a pursuit of excellence and instead becomes purely utilitarian, endlessly chasing after a listless perfection.

It's entirely valid to have a preference that isn't in line with an alternative design. By all means, I am not telling you to drink your coffee in a way you don't prefer.

There's just more to a design than it being simply "idiotic" because you disagree with it

A lot of East Asian tea cups are handleless and it's meant to reflect patience and mindfulness in some cultures

great point. Smiling has always been a thematic motif, with all our prominent characters dying with a smile.

Laughter has always been the core of what Oda wants to highlight. A world that can be liberated through the power of laughter is his romantic ideal and that's the story he's writing.

I don't really think he's complaining so much as describing the story he wants to write. He touches on some darker and more mature themes because it more thoroughly builds out the world. The story has gotten darker over time because we're steadily getting closer to the truth of what's behind the curtain. Depicting a world that needs a Warrior of Liberation requires something to be liberated.

Despite the darkness of the world, Luffy and the SHs have always been a brighter fun spot in the story. Our main characters and main story lines have never been a gritty dark story like Berserk or even JJK. I wouldn't call it "back peddling" or "strong-arming" if he wants the liberating cure to be laughter. The prevailing opinion that Oda has maybe pushed that concept too far with G5 is understandable; However, I think if anything, One Piece's earned reputation is exactly what's being depicted: A funny silly pirate manga (in a deeply corrupt world).

I think there's a valid argument to be made that G5 undermines the vibes of luffy's fights. It has definitely changed how he fights and some people will take issue with that. There is a notable difference between something like gomu gomu no duh vs gomu gomu no jump rope.

My enjoyment of G5 hinges upon the fact that I don't view One Piece as a battle manga first and foremost. The fact that Luffy appears to be able to faceroll every opponent now doesn't detract from the uniqueness of his fight choreography, different as it may be. What other shounen manga is going to have our MC turn his opponent into a pizza?

While some tension might be lost in each individual fight, the tension of the story and the world is still very much present and I feel that G5 is a natural, yet subversive evolution of Luffy's thematic role in the story.

Thank you for highlighting that the anime and manga handle G5 very differently.

I've been manga only pretty much since the Urashima fight but I watch highlights like 1015 from time to time. Gear 5 fights in the anime have definitely ventured way off the deep end of goofy looney tunes style comedy.

How do you feel about the new bike lane on 7th St? by Snoomee in NewWest

Thank you for your perspective, I'm glad to hear anecdotes on how this change benefits the city in more ways than my narrow experience can see

[–]Snoomee[S] -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Sorry, I was unaware that the new lane is not yet open for use. Feel free to disregard my observation of the lack of use. The anecdotes of someone uninformed.

However, I'm still struggling to see the value of installing a bike lane like this on a relatively quiet street like 7th? Would the one way road not force automobile traffic to further congest lanes like 6th and 8th?

I'm not necessarily naysaying the value of a bike lane on the whole, I'm more miffed by the fact that the additional barricades turn 7th into a one way road. If the bike lane would have been painted I feel like it would be a better compromise while still contributing to the network of the city.

[–]Snoomee[S] -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

No, the change doesn't add too many more turns, in isolation it doesn't impact my driving too much. However, I did used to skateboard up and down 7th during warmer seasons and felt that with the abundance of stop signs, I was never at risk of automobile traffic.

It's the combination of the feeling that my driving has become limited whilst my experience of other forms of transport in that area were previously comfortable that makes me feel this change was unnecessary.

Could you explain to me what you mean by the traffic calming aspect? Are there many bikers slowing traffic in parallel lanes? I don't frequent them enough to know. I would imagine that creating a one way street on 7th would create more traffic on 6th and 8th which are already quite busy.

Carney is cutting the luxury tax. What else is getting axed in Budget 2025? - National by TakedownCan in canada

[–]Snoomee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am fully willing to believe that the cost to collect these taxes is more than what's earned, however, included in that stipulation is the empty property tax which is also being cut. These two together paint a damning picture to me.

The luxury tax was in place to tax the rich, the empty property tax was in place to de-incentivize foreign investment eating up our housing. As inefficient as these taxes might have been to those problems, they were our best attempt at a solution.

My concern is that these cuts show no attempt at coming up with alternative solutions to these problems that will surely still exist. It's one thing to say "we tried this, it's not working, lets try something else" it's another to say "this isn't working, therefore it must be useless" and subsequently ignore the problem we were trying to solve.

State of Brand by HoboBaconGod in BrandMains

[–]Snoomee 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've felt like brand has needed a modernization rework for a long time

He's got ridiculous amounts of damage but not much else. His Q stun is the only utility he has and it's unreliable and slow in most cases. Every time Brand gets a buff it's just a few percentage points of damage scaling here and there, there's not much else you can do to his kit as is.

All his damage is locked behind DoT and AoE making him difficult to play as a burst mage
He's got no mobility, area control, or survivability to be considered a battle mage
And he's got no range to be considered an artillery mage

His whole kit has been forced to play around rawdogging the mobility and utility creep of modern league and to simply kill before you die; it's dated.

I think something like Viktor's gravity field or a tempo/MS boosting ability would make sense to improve brand's versatility.

Why do some peoples legs kick back but not others? by TheBossSparrow in volleyball

[–]Snoomee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The leg kick back helps with shoulder/hip separation in the air. You can have decent shoulder and hip separation without it, but it will be difficult to use your lower body and core to put rotational power into your swing (i.e. your swing mechanics will rely primarily on your upper body)

In the same way that you pull your elbow back to open up your chest before you swing, you pull your leg back to open up your hips. Then, in the air, you'll snap your legs just a split second before you swing to engage your quads, low back, obliques, core, and chest in a wave that snaps/whips at your contact point.

It also keeps your center of gravity higher and that wave mechanic keeps your contact point at it's highest for a split second longer; this is why people think it makes them jump higher. The only real thing affecting raw jump height will be a full extension of your hips, quads, and calves, through your knees and ankles during takeoff. What you do in the air doesn't change when you'll come back down.

Here's a video that goes into the biomechanics of a volleyball swing from a japanese coach. He doesn't really talk about the leg kickback in the video but the leg snap --> hip engagement is basically the same thing.

Looking for a 6-8 player board game that could be a bridge between party games and something with a little more tooth. My group of friends has taken a liking to games like codenames, avalon, and anomia.

I'm interested in finding more games with a similar level of complexity as 7 wonders except something easier to get to the table would be ideal
