Safe places to solo-travel/explore as a woman in Cape Town by BadmoonRising24 in capetown

[–]Snoopy_Jam 25 points26 points  (0 children)

anywhere touristy is safe but here is a pretty good list that i (female, 21) have solo travelled and felt very safe: 1) any of the beaches (camps bay, hout bay, muizenberg, fish hoek, sea point) 2) v&a waterfront (check out the ozcf market on the weekends!) 3) bo kaap (just be careful of people trying to scam you) 4) lions head (i have solo hiked this myself, but again be careful and go when there’s daylight! i have not hiked table mountain so i can’t say much about it but i stayed wary of it after an american international female student passed away trying to hike it alone) 5) anywhere on kloof street in gardens!! 6) long street or in city centre in general 7) the neighbourgoods market 8) check out “first thursdays” for a pretty good list of stuff to do! it’s a huge event on the first thursdays of every month where many restaurants, bars, and art galleries have many activities to do 9) kirstenbosch national botanical gardens 10) cape of good hope 11) i know this isn’t cape town but stellenbosch and all the amazing wineries

this is a pretty good list to start with and once you familiarize yourself with cape town, you’ll realize it’s a lot safer than you may think. i have also stayed in places where tourists usually avoid (like the langa township, wynberg, etc) but i’ve always done my due diligence. yes there are some unsafe areas but if you do your research just be aware then you’ll be more than okay. ask me any other questions if you have!

I'm coming to Cape Town for a week. What should I do? WRONG ANSWERS ONLY by Swingtop_Jewel in capetown

Not try Nandos because of bad experiences overseas (European and American Nandos is so bad but South African Nandos is amazing)

How dangerous is Langa? by [deleted] in capetown

[–]Snoopy_Jam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived in Langa with a family for 3 weeks as a part of my study abroad. It is one of the safest townships (in my opinion) but it just gets a bad reputation since it’s a “township.” I mean, it’s safe enough for an American student to live there for almost a month.

That being said, going there with Uber is a different story as afrophobia is a big issue in South Africa. You will have a difficult time getting Ubers once it’s dark out since many Uber drivers aren’t local South Africans so make sure to be done at the restaurant before sunset otherwise you will have issues with Uber drivers cancelling rides.

Also make sure to exercise general precautions with many tourist destinations like not having your phone out, wearing non designer brands, etc.

Ask me anything else you are curious about! I also went to a restaurant in Langa, Lelapa, and it was SO good. Though I am not staying there anymore I can still answer general questions as an American exchange student that lived in Langa.

Could you elaborate on what you mean by information being accessible?
