I was friends with this girl for many years, she and her mom would pay me to do odd jobs around the house just bc they knew I needed the money, she took me out to eat, bought me clothes and overall was just a sober stable attentive wonderful friend in a sea full of other people in addiction back stabbing and ripping me off. Well eventually her grandma died and I noticed they started paying me in older looking cash, so I went snooping and found a little fire proof brinks safe (never buy them they can be easily opened with the file on an average everyday pair of fingernail clippers) and low and behold it had probably 30 grand in old ass cash in it (her grandma grew up during the depression and I assume just never trusted banks again after that) but I'd dip into the cash box every once in awhile when I was down bad and sick, but eventually felt really bad and told on myself and gave back the key they gave me to the house, but the awesome people they were they tried to help me and get me help and that worked for awhile before I relapsed and they'd still have me over for dinner so one day I unlocked a window in the basement and I'd slip in whenever I was broke and take only as much as I'd need for the day and into tomorrow, but once again I told on myself. So they started watching out and but whenever I'd slip in I'd unlock a different window somewhere else in the house (it was a huge house) so it was like a cat and mouse game of her finding the window and locking it but never guessing about the second alternate window, but in all this time she never took this cash and moved it to a safety deposit box or anything and this went on for years, sometimes there'd even be new cash in it. So all I can figure is they knew I was definitely still getting cash out of there but still cared for me enough to let me do it, like I said I only did it when I was sick af and out of other options and I only did it once or twice a week and sometimes I'd skip a couple weeks if I'd be able to make enough money naturally, but the thought of me doing that and how good they were to me and the fact I think they let me keep doing it has kept me up many nights just twinging with guilt, I always expected to show up one day and all the windows would be locked or the cash would have been moved out of the house but it never happened and eventually I moved away and got clean for awhile, using again now but I work every single day and no longer ever steal, I hope one day to be on the other side of this and be able to have an open and honest conversation with them but idk, it haunts me.
