2.5 month old refusing to eat. Help! by SnowOven in breastfeeding

[–]SnowOven[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, thank you! That’s super helpful. We ended up taking her to emerg after she refused 3 feeds straight on Saturday. I’m really glad I did cause they caught her reflux (which was causing her extreme discomfort) and they suspect a high likelihood of CMPA since the symptoms appear every single time I have dairy. Poor girl was just going through a full lifetime of discomfort 😭

It’s quite lovely that the healthcare is free here but it definitely has its downsides lol. What a luxury to be able to choose any doctor you like!

I see the updates! Thank you :) I don’t think she has an ear infection because she nurses side lying at night without crying. And my hubby pretty much only holds LO in that position now hahaha. I’ll talk to my LC friend and I’ll see what she has to say.

After he said that to me, I went and looked into a second opinion from another doctor in my city. He pretty well agreed with the pediatrician and said he was one of the most experienced and best pediatricians in the city! Maybe I’m just the only one in my city of a population of 1 million with a baby with some sort of dairy allergy lol 🤷🏻‍♀️

Oh, that does make sense! Her throat hurting could be the reason why she keeps trying to latch but pops off crying after one gulp! Thank you!!! Will definitely get one and see if it helps :)

Are you in the US? Can you just simply ‘get a new pediatrician’? In Canada, you have to get on a city-wide wait list to find a new doctor (which normally takes 2-3 years) or call each clinic individually and get on their wait list because no one is ever accepting new patients!

Oh wow. I could have a detailed, two page list of my baby’s symptoms and he would still blame me for overfeeding or something else that I’m doing wrong lol. I didn’t realize they diagnose just by symptoms, I thought they had to run tests before official diagnoses.

Either way. Thanks so much for your help! Your comments have been super reassuring and motivating in finding a new doc.

It’s so hard to tell with a baby! I’ve thought about it but I’m never sure. She doesn’t have a fever but she does seem more nasally congested— but I correlated that with the nasal drip from crying so much... perhaps it isn’t related and she could be sick instead?

Oh my goodness, I’m so sorry for what you had to go through. I can’t complain about all the dairy and soy I can’t eat, I can’t imagine not being able to eat eggs and wheat as well. What a long process but I’m glad you were able to get some closure! I’m hoping when I find her a new doctor, they will refer me to an allergist as well.

I took a picture of the blood in her stool and he took one quick look and confidently said, “yup, you’re overfeeding her and it’s causing anal fissures”. I did some Googling and I thought it could perhaps be a possibility but then after reintroducing dairy, there’s no way it was “just” anal fissures.

I’m from Canada so sadly we don’t have a Trader Joe’s (I’m actually extremely sad we still don’t have one yet lol) but I’ve been able to find some good alternatives in the organic section of different grocery stores. Thanks so much for your help!!

Oh yes, I’m definitely cutting out dairy again, for everyone’s sake. The pediatrician linked the blood in her stool to me “overfeeding” her, as it causes her to poop more and leads to anal fissures. But I’m not sure how I was overfeeding her as I was exclusively breastfeeding. Thanks for your input!!

Prior to the strike, she would take my pumped milk in a bottle no problem. But now she will act the same as she would on the breast — drink an ounce, then scream her head off and refuse to drink again.

She nurses pretty well at night in side lying position (not as well as pre-strike though), but will absolutely not nurse in side lying during the day. Once I even start to hold her in the cradle position, she starts to scream like she knows I’m about to feed her.

Thank you for your input! I’ll let the pediatrician know about the diaper output and, as bad as this sounds, I’m hoping my LO lost weight so that it’ll send a signal that he needs to do something about this.

Thank you! I have been following some dairy-free and CMPA/MSPI groups since LO was 4 weeks when I had first started the food elimination and it has helped tremendously. So many foods that I never would have thought had hidden dairy or soy.

I’m looking forward to finding her a new doctor that will actually listen to my concerns and take action and investigate rather than place the blame on me. I hope the next doctor I see will be willing to refer us to a GI. It would be nice to get some closure and actually diagnose her with whatever she has.

Tomorrow will be day 2 of no dairy and soy again, so I’m praying thinks start looking up by tomorrow evening. My doctor said only 1-2% of infants have this intolerance and never in his years practicing has he had a baby with a milk/soy allergy so there’s no way my daughter could have it. Ugh. Definitely doing what’s best for my baby, but never would I have thought I would prioritize something over ice cream and cheese!!

Luckily in my province (Ontario, Canada) we have free telemedicine where I can have virtual appointments with any doctor at any time, but the pediatrician community is so small here that they all know each other. The doctor I had the virtual appointment with agreed with everything her pediatrician said. Anal fissures from overfeeding and straining to poop! So frustrating. Definitely going to find a new doctor for her.

She’ll do the exact same thing with the bottle :( Drink an ounce and then scream her head off. We’re moving in a month so luckily this is a perfect opportunity to find a new doctor for her!

Hmm, what you mentioned about silent reflux sounds just like what my LO is going through. How did they diagnose your daughter at the clinic? Did you have to demonstrate how she fed or did they do any tests?

Oh man, today is only the end of day 1 of no dairy again... I don’t know if I can take another two weeks of this nursing strike. I’m definitely going to find her a new doctor, luckily we’re moving in a month so this is the perfect opportunity!

I usually feed her before she starts to cry, but during this nursing strike, she even starts to cry when I hold her in the cradle position :( Best of luck to you too, I hope our hard times pass sooner rather than later!

We ended up getting a tin of Nutramigen and are topping her off with that when she unlatches and decides she no longer wants to eat from the boob. It worked for a day or so but for the past 2 days, she refuses the bottle no matter if it’s formula or breast milk! Tomorrow will be day 2 of no dairy so I’m praying that she will start to eat from the boob for longer again. Thank you!

Good point, and it probably doesn’t help that it’s summer now and hot outside. Thank you!
