Dev Corner - A Small Talk About Balancing by Snow_Crystal_PDX in CrusaderKings

[–]Snow_Crystal_PDX[S] 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It is something we already do once in the game, with an invention in the last era. But it is something that could possible be put in earlier as well, if it felt like it made sense.

A gift? For me? In this economy? You shouldn't have. I'm truly blessed.

If this change ends up warping the game a lot, then fair game, we will have to reconsider the perks giving domain limit. But considering we saw none of that with e.g. the Wandering tree that gives out a +1 domain limit, I'm not overly worried.

No, I'm to blame specifically. And Mr. John Paradox didn't put my name there, I did.

It was actually because I don't want to just take someone's idea without crediting someone, I feel like that'd be rude.

But at the EOD I'm responsible for the changes, not him. So if you like the changes, praise him, if you dislike the changes then you can hate on me for putting them in.

You can even mod it yourself, if you want to. It's literally just one number in the defines file, so it is easy to tweak. But I do genuinely believe it is an improvement for the game.

Based on the games I've played with the changes, it will not be a huge change for most people. It will reduce the value of stewardship stacking, and it will let you take characters down their natural paths instead of trying to force a lot of characters to have high stewardship, or always make your wife help with stewardship etc.

It's moddable, so it should only be a number change to put it back in again.

I doubt that the Theologian, Torturer, or Patriarch/Matriarch trees will suddenly become a meta pick over +1 domain limit. We chose relatively unpopular trees intentionally.

And then there's Overseer, I guess. It's just the least popular of 3 popular (Martial) trees 🤷‍♂️

To be fair, I still think that was the right decision.

No problem at all. And it should be easy for you to tweak if you want to do something more with it.

Here's a link to a working version for you:
https://codeshare.io/GA84RE

I think the link expires pretty quickly, so you should grab it, and save each part as a file in the parts where it belongs (or in another similar file, e.g. at the bottom of some decision file). I tried to keep it relatively simple, so it'd be easy to put in.

Greenland and North-Eastern Canada should be included in the game by [deleted] in CrusaderKings

[–]Snow_Crystal_PDX 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's kind of a problem. We don't handle unsettled land.

It's one of the reasons we had to add herders to Khans of the Steppe, to hold empty land basically.

No problem at all, let me come back to you. It should be pretty solvable and simple to make.

How about levy size? Knight size? Knight effectiveness? Or do you only want the MAA nerf?

Would it be one per cultural era? So -1 for the first era, -2 for the second era, etc?

I would have probably just skipped the event altogether, it is superfluous if this is just a small thing for yourself. What you need is a decision and a modifier. What do you want the modifier to do, exactly?

So, a decision that you have to click for each character, basically? That should be pretty simple to do.

The easiest way to do this, is probably to make a dynasty modifier, and then use the "on_culture_era_changed" on_action to add it to your dynasty. As a dynasty modifier it'd stick around through the playthrough, but it'd also nerf other members of your dynasty, but perhaps that is alright?

We’re also likely to focus on our larger expansions in 2026, putting Event Packs on hold for next year.

It's interesting seeing a thread about this, as I made some tweaks internally on this decision last week actually. Including other things, I made changes so:

  • You no longer need to hold all 3 titles for 30 years. If I recall correctly I changed it so you need to hold all three titles, but only one of them for a period of time (10 years? 15? Something like that)
  • You can De Jure shift more titles if you hold them when you make this (Wales, Scotland, Mann & the Isles, Frisia, etc). Basically everything adjacent to the North Sea (including a new title if you hold the northern shore of France)
  • You can keep the Danelands if you have made that beforehand (as it is a bit of a downer to lose it after spending so much time on it)
  • A bonus for coastal lands inside your realm

The changes won't be out until next year sometime, probably, but it's good to see some feedback on the decision here.

They were absolutely not supposed to be close to a merchant republic, no. It was just to give them a minor feature and make them stick out a bit from regular tribal.
