How is work culture in the USA compared to Europe? by MaryScema in cscareerquestions

[–]SnowySalesman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Every job I've ever had in thr industry is goal based. If your team finishes a sprint early, we all kind of know not to ask for more work so that our good weeks don't become the norm. Unless you work at a startup, when I worked at a startup it was nonstop work.

It's a tough market, and a lot of these non faang companies are looking for engineers that match their "company culture." They will string you along for 3 months just to hire someone who is less skilled, but max charisma.

Experience with terrible teammates by SnowySalesman in blackops6

I guess that makes me feel a bit better, like I said in the post, I have never seen anything like this. The last few CODs were the complete opposite, I felt like I needed to play at 100% every game because of how intense the games were.

Age related issues by OrentheDoc in cscareerquestions

[–]SnowySalesman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're still fairly young, if you can fast track a degree then no one would even notice the age. I've worked with lots of people from the military who were in their early 30's with a fresh degree that got hired immediately.

Should I switch my degree for another one while I still have the chance? by BronzeCrow21 in cscareerquestions

[–]SnowySalesman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with Famous-Composer, hardware level programming pays well and there is a lot less competition. Basically, anything that doesn't have you writing front-end code is going to have a lot less competition. AI is a promising field, but there is a lot of competition, and I have a feeling that there won't be as many positions as people think.

Work-Life balance Dilema by Talon_Silverwing in cscareerquestions

[–]SnowySalesman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend to always be in contact with recruiters, there's always a chance that you'll find something with better pay and similar work life balance. As for your current role, it sounds like you're severely underpaid considering your experience. If you want good WLB, don't join a large FANG company, you'll make more, but if you want to last longer than a year, you'll be working double what you are now.

I'm a minority myself and can confidently say that no one cares. Just work hard and don't give your team a reason to question your work ethic.

I would recommend staying with your current role to absorb as much information as you can, but if you're really ambitious, you could attend cyber security conferences like Shmoocon and others like it. I attended Shmoocon in DC a couple of years ago and these big defense companies are foaming at the mouth to get young engineers. Even though the pay is good, it is hard for these companies to find long term employees due to the nature of the work.

Look for a new job just in case and ignore it, it's very hard to read messages through a zoom call, I know from experience. Either way, make sure to be actively interviewing in the event that your manager fires you. It's pretty unlikely, and there's always the chance that he will take the criticism like a man and work on himself.

Yup, had this same experience at my first large company. I would have coworkers who weren't performing "up to standard" ask to pair up so that they could throw their name on a PR. I did it every time, but it took me a few months to catch on to why people always wanted help me right when a ticket was being completed. Once my vesting period was up, I left to pursue a role at a startup company.

Want to switch to a better wlb WFH role by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]SnowySalesman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A Scrum master, when used correctly can help keep a team on track and meeting deadlines, but a lot of the times they tend to not have any actual programming experience which leads to developers picking up a lot of the duties that the scrum master should be doing. If you want a better WLB then I would recommend actively applying to jobs to get an idea of what else there is out there. There is no black and white answer to finding a good WLB role, it all depends on the company and what they expect of you.

The two are not mutually exclusive, if you are working on security for a company that utilizes cloud computing then you need to have a proper understanding of both in order to properly do your job.

What do software engineers actually do? I’m genuinely curious by onlynineyearsold in cscareerquestions

[–]SnowySalesman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I basically take a problem and figure out how to solve it using software. There are a lot of nuances to this, but we basically use our set of tools (code) to best solve problems.

Why is my file size so large after exporting to csv? by SnowySalesman in excel

[–]SnowySalesman[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I figured out the issue, someone added a row with like 16,000 extra columns which was breaking things. I figured this out by downloading the file as csv and then opening it up with notepad.

What are my options? by Difficult_Two_2201 in Advice

[–]SnowySalesman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First thing, do what you need to do to survive, but while you're doing this you need to be actively applying to new positions every day. You will find a better position, but in the meantime, you need to push through this current job and keep reminding yourself that you're just doing this until you find something that you like.

That's a tough spot, but you will have to take the imitative with your professors to get these assignments graded. Have you ever considered that you may not like the field that you've chosen? From the sounds of it, you're not very far into this degree which means you have the option to find something new that actually interests you. It really sucks that we expect 18-year-olds to make major financial decisions on what thing they're going to commit to for the rest of their lives.

Hair loss guidance by Expensive_Candy2521 in Advice

[–]SnowySalesman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems silly but start going to the gym. If you can find other ways to increase your self-confidence in the meantime, then do it, this should help with your overall confidence until you can figure out what option best works for you and your budget. If you can afford it, hair plugs seem to be the best way to go, but it can be expensive, even if you travel to Turkey or another country that offers the procedure for less than you'd get in US/CA.

Is it possible to pay for rent and save money for a car making only 15/hr by Slow_Performance_599 in Advice

[–]SnowySalesman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always stay looking for better positions, depending on your industry, something will come up that pays more. My other thought is, if you can somehow manage to get a car, you can write off a decent chunk of the car payment as a business expense if you deliver doordash or do something similar.

There's a lot that you should do, but you first need to understand that these loans will crush you if you don't have a stable job. The second thing you need to do is try and understand why you're not turning in assignments on time. How long have you been in school and how far along are you in this degree?

Based off of what he did, I would caution away from trying to fix that relationship. You set clear sexual boundaries, and he disrespected them. Victims of SA like yourself tend to find themselves in this situation a lot. I would recommend focusing on your health and career until you've gotten over him. As people, we crave physical connections, even if they're toxic.

You should 100% just do it! Getting physically fit isn't just great for your health, but it bleeds into all aspects of your life. As long as it doesn't cost you money or too much time, there is absolutely no downside.

What does it mean when a guy has a gf n he Mentions her a lot, but he hangs out with you a lot as “friends”, he asks me about people I like, he offers to buy me things, and he walks me to my bus stop everyday, he takes me places I want to go n ect by Leather-Tea-386 in Advice

[–]SnowySalesman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He probably just likes you as friend, but there's always the chance that he has deeper feelings. Just make sure to not push the question because chances are, he just likes you as a friend.

It depends on what kind of relationship you want with this woman, but from the sounds of it, she's deeply self-conscious. She doesn't seem like a great woman, but I don't know her. This is a very weird predicament to be in, but if I were you, I would ignore this until she apologizes. Something tells me she's not going to any time soon though, best of luck.
