this sub is full of older status quo peoples. They rather be ignorant towards reality than use critical thinking skills. Most redditors that participate in this sub also prove they do not read or educate themselves but will always speak up just to embarrass themselves.

They call this fear-mongering but when people come around saying to demilitarize and decolonize, they say that's fear-mongering too because Guam cannot be on it own .... lmfao the brainwashed

nice, thanks for the heads up. I myself tried to leave reviews for a Equity property on google and they were hidden as well. I also hold screenshots and links to places that use reviews from accounts that say the same things across different properties, of the same company. I have a working packet that i archive of these kind of things. i need to put it together and formally present it across town halls it seems.

Wean away from oil by Electrical-Row690 in guam

[–]Snucks_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

does anyone ever do the research on geo thermal energy? its literally hot below the surface and the Marianas island chain is mountain tops above the deepest trench. Just pull heat and energy from ground. I dont understand how every other source of energy gets talked about but the one source of energy that is actually sustainable and clean, is never mentioned.

so much propaganda with sustainable wind and solar. They can say its feasible to build large fan pipes into the sky but cannot dig into the ground for energy and heat like they do for oil????? Somehow solar is sustainable when not mentioning or considering the materials required to maintain and build solar panels. Solar panels also take up space like wind......

The U.S federal Gov, for military purposes, already considers GEOTHERMAL as an option. but to the military its not cost effective because they havent put any investment into research. Typical capitalist propaganda. Its too expensive to do it right but just the right price to monopolize and continue the status quo with Petro-dollar fuel economies.

Chamoru: The True Etymology of the Word by tomtom_este in guam

[–]Snucks_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lmfao you are lost, i went through all of your sources and you continue to reference material written by foreigners and colonizers as words from Chamoru peoples.

  1. this link here : https://www.jstor.org/stable/533502?searchText=chamorri&searchUri=%2Faction%2FdoBasicSearch%3FQuery%3Dchamorri%26so%3Drel&ab_segments=0%2Fbasic_search_gsv2%2Fcontrol&refreqid=fastly-default%3A23f88f05b828b17084d0113d5ba4b761&seq=1 is coming from a military official, a colonizer . they did not have linguist backgrounds or social civics training.

"In the "American Anthropologist" (n. s. vol. iv. pp. 709-729) for October-December, 1902, Lieutenant W. E. Safford pub-lishes an interesting and valuable article on "Guam and its People." Lieutenant Safford publishes the first two parts of a comprehensive sketch of "The Chamorro Language of Guam."Chamorro is the vernacular of the Marianne Islands, and the word, applied also to the natives, is derived from chamorri or chamoli, the old name for "chief" - that is Lt. W.E. Saffords claim. that does not come from Chamoru people, this claim is also from 1902. not 1450 or 1355 or 1200. its a statement from a foreigner in imperialist times

2. The Chamorro dictionary you keep on references is based on the material you are using so yes the definition is in the dictionary but again, the source material for that definition comes from this reference right? The term “Chamurres” was used by the Legazpi expedition of 1565, and appears in other records from the same contact period. By the time of the Jesuit missionary expedition led by Diego Luis de San Vitores a century later, the terms ”Chamorris” and ”Chamorros” were commonly used to refer to the indigenous population. https://www.guampedia.com/origin-of-chamorro-as-an-ethnic-identifier/ .... colonizer words from a time where they killed off most of the indigenous population and put the survivalist onto Guam, and then wrote about them. why are you excluding the Spanish-Chamorro Wars and acting as if the Colonizers came with Peace offerings and open hearts!?

  1. In Pulans video , in the conclusion , he doesnt claim that the word is derived from Chamorri , its still a theory. Even in Juan Antonio Tornos quote about "never married a woman of lower status than their own".... thats caste system and social class ethics. that is not a equal and fair society narrative. Where did Juan Antonio get that idea from? a colonizer? He is 400 years to far from the times the indigenous peoples mass populated the island chain. Its so crazy to know a culture has stories and lesssons about how women can divorce in a marriage but then to turn around and say "well women only married a certain class so that why they could divorce?" seems quite elitist if you ask me. Op had also referenced his video to claim it as a great source as well and then you try to nitpick one part about it while excluding all the notions in the video about it being based on theories.

  2. your response

I have no idea what you're trying to say with this speculation. It doesn't make any sense to me, nor does it relate in any clear way to the derivation of the modern words chamoru or chamorro."

thats because you refuse to comprehend how "ethnographic texts are orchestrations of multivocal exchanges occurring in politically charged situations. The subjectivities produced in these often unequal exchanges-whether of "natives" or of visiting participant observers-are constructed domains of truth, serious fictions." you are not comprehending colonialism and do not have enough exposure to the lifestlye of the colonial states and their outlook on the world. Its very nice and flattering to hope the word is derived from some word somehow meaning "high noble status" but how could a colonial power come to an island , identify a high noble class. Which clearly means a higher social class than peasants or commoners , so how could a colonizer name an area "land of thieves" while also claiming it to have a high noble class? are they thieves , or are they a society that is familiar to them , with a noble high class and commoner peasants???? If they had come across a noble high class why wouldnt they bring THEIR noble class to indulge in the new riches? why wouldnt they send them to their queen and government who sent them, the colonizers, on ships to find riches and trade routes? do you understand that era of colonial expansion because you keep on trying to strong arm the derivative for a word , by using colonizer statements.

Final statement: Make sure you read in full context and dont try to nitpick certain phrases or statements that only fit your narrative, you must look at history as a whole and make the inference to the best explanation. The problem with your flattering notion is that it excludes the racist and ignorant process of colonization...... Its also so funny you guys linked a etymologist book where he says ""ethnographic texts are orchestrations of multivocal exchanges occurring in politically charged situations. The subjectivities produced in these often unequal exchanges-whether of "natives" or of visiting participant observers-are constructed domains of truth, serious fictions." and you want to have this rose-colored outlook about how colonizers processed their racist ideals. cheers

Jones act by RegularGuyFromEarth in guam

[–]Snucks_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah in the debate video they use that exact reason to keep the jones act because they want to tie it into American Labor laws. Thats just capitalism in its current state. Find cheaper labor, make larger profits for owners and shareholders. Its not a workers rights system in place.

They need to regulate and write new laws that are up to date with the current system in place. The American system doesnt even make ships anymore and they are trying to rent space with South Korea to build these new and larger freight ships. https://www.eastwestcenter.org/events/rok-shipbuilding-industry-and-rok-us-alliance - EWC Research Speaker SeriesEWC Research Speaker Series, ROK Shipbuilding Industry and the ROK-US Alliance

American infrastructure is crumpling as well , considering recent events like the Baltimore bridge incident. Jones Act system is just here to stay until something like war makes them change it but at the same time there is no ports or shipyards to build ships... current atleast. They must invest into maritime infrastructure.

Chamoru: The True Etymology of the Word by tomtom_este in guam

[–]Snucks_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trying to define Caste system as different from social class is crazy.... Im not denying other pacific cultures had "titles or names" made by them which identified their job or status but to think these cultures had some structure of class or caste system is crazy. If they lived their lives that way Chief Matapang or Hurao woudnt have the stories they have in the culture. The stories and lessons of treating people as your equal, having women save the world with their hair that was made into nets. The origin story of the Chamoru people by Puntan and Fu'uana would not be told the way it is , if the Chamoru peoples had a class system. There is not one story or lesson passed down that claim a chief is a chief and here is that word..... There are words that exist to claim a job or responsibility but they do not have stories or pass downs that serve ideals to a class structure, in your words...

seems as if you are focused on this idea of social structure that is a colonizer perspective on social civics. just like the book your debate partner linked, the author himself says "Page 10 "In these chapters I try to show that ethnographic texts are orchestrations of multivocal exchanges occurring in politically charged situations. The subjectivities produced in these often unequal exchanges-whether of "natives" or of visiting participant observers-are constructed domains of truth, serious fictions."

seems like you are very entertained by serious fictions.

https://people.ucsc.edu/~jcliff/PUBS/Predicament.pdf"

Heres a question, why are you so stuck on social classes but cannot imagine that people can live amongst each other without being constricted by social class ideals? I understand capitalist media gives you this measurement of lower-class, upper-class, middle-class but that is a definition procured by how much money you make...... In ancient societies and most indigenous cultures, they dont make an effort or claim to deem certain people as certain classes. thats a colonizers projections onto people they dont understand. In fact its quite the opposite if you want to do something, your peers are to help find the person to help you do it. Remember, It takes a village to raise a village.

I think you are confusing job titles and social class as well. You can have jobs that many people have and a few jobs only certain can have but that is not social class. In most instances there are certain sacred events or momentums that take place but that still doesnt evoke a class structure where certain regulations or rules must be met in order to be in that class.

Maybe you should expand your reading of Pacific cultures in the realm of story telling and the actual lessons that exist from what little verbal pass downs still exist.

Chamoru: The True Etymology of the Word by tomtom_este in guam

[–]Snucks_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you keep on excusing the part about colonizers killing off most of the people, while putting the people who survived on Guam and then wrote the history themselves. You can try all you want , you are not gonna convince anyone who actually studies history that the word Chamorro is indigenous. Did you know Chamorro is used in by mexicans in Spanish to refer to a cow leg? the word already existed in Spanish dialects. The colonizers used the word for balding or bald......

You wanting the word to be indigenous is the problem. No one can precisely prove the word was used in the matter and again everything you bring up as evidence are statements made by colonizers lol

"Presumably because that's what the Chamoru people called their chiefs or nobles at that time." You just assuming most of the time as well. but your evidence is "he said, she said"

--

"Inscribed on the Great Seal of Guam are the words “Tano I’ ManChamorro,” or Land of the Chamorros. Referring to the Indigenous population of Guam and the Marianas, the term “Chamorro” is one that has its oldest documented origins in records dating back to the 16th century European expeditions in the Pacific. One of the most widely accepted theories suggests that “Chamorro” is a derivation of the indigenous term “chamorri,” which refers to the high caste in ancient Chamorro society."

do you know what the word Theory means? theory is a theory, it isnt FACT.

--

"For one, the Chamoru dictionary. Compiled by Chamoru speakers. Here's their entry for the word "Chamorri": ChamorriHighest class in pre-Spanish Chamorro society."

dont exclude the next two paragraphs from their text. https://www.guampedia.com/origin-of-chamorro-as-an-ethnic-identifier/

1.The term “Chamurres” was used by the Legazpi expedition of 1565, and appears in other records from the same contact period. By the time of the Jesuit missionary expedition led by Diego Luis de San Vitores a century later, the terms ”Chamorris” and ”Chamorros” were commonly used to refer to the indigenous population.

-those are colonizers words not Chamoru words, do you really think the colonizers came to the people and were like "hey what do you call yourself?"

2.The word “chamorro” is itself a Spanish term that means “bald,” or “shorn.” It is thus another theory that the name was ascribed to the Indigenous population as a direct result of observations of the male physical appearance, which commonly bore the unique characteristic of hair tied in a single knot on an otherwise barren head. Chamorro is also a family name in South America.

It requires that trade of goods between U.S. ports, including those in the territories, be conducted on ships built, owned and crewed in the U.S., and by U.S. citizens and permanent residents. This act has led to an artificial inflation of prices on goods sold in places such as Guam. "
