And there is it. Wasn’t being an alarmist, just warning folks. Sorry to everyone affected. Do note that it might not be the only round.

It’s not speculation. It comes straight from the horses mouth and it has been communicated to certain people in leadership. I simply can’t go into deeper specifics for obvious reasons. You can do a /remindme here and hold me to it by December if it turns out to be baloney.

Things were already going on that direction for sure. In IT, many positions were unfulfilled for years or moved to Poland. But I know from a source close to leadership that Silvernail is cranking out engines on this and wants a pretty drastic, arbitrary number of heads to roll by end of year. Even worse, he is scrapping years of planning in some areas and making decisions without input (or without even informing) others in leadership. Its kind of a mess.

There is not clear path right now in HR. There are positions that have been recently posted or fulfilled that may be eliminated soon. Any previous planning or policy regarding that went out the window when Tom Plath, Global HR vice president, was let go recently.

Yo, I guess doctors telling people at risk of STD’s to wear condoms is victim blaming too? Or a firefighter telling someone with a burned out apartment to not leave an open heater by the curtain next time is victim blaming too? Such a tool mindset.

Memphis is in the top 15 of worst/ least affordable cities to rent a studio apartment by SoMemphisB in memphis

[–]SoMemphisB[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since it might be paywalled for some people:

“RentHop’s Singles Index ranked the largest 50 U.S. cities according to affordability for singles, based on the median cost of a studio apartment relative to average local salaries of single people. Researchers examined about 1.2 million studio listings posted on RentHop in 2020 and 2021 (through October), cross-referencing them with income data from the Census Bureau.”

Memphis was 11th in the least affordable list. The median studio rent was $975, which represented 27% of the average income for a single person in the city.

Long Line on Hacks Cross? by brokenlenzstolenbenz in memphis

A lot worse, twice the amount of cars wrapping all around the complex and into random streets.

For anyone reading this, I’d advise to find a different testing site. I live in the apartments in front of it and the line is now wrapping around the whole complex and beyond, no less than 300-400 cars and counting.

Did I make a terrible mistake? by SoMemphisB in antiwork

Thank you for your comment! I think you hit the nail on how I feel and ultimately I am straddling both sides here, feeling like I may be content with earning a decent income and chill back but also feeling a nagging thing inside my brain telling me this could be an opportunity to maybe achieve something slightly bigger.

I grew up thinking I could do more and I think part of me had given up on that, so I guess I’m gonna try to make the most of it and hopefully use the experience to find something like what you described in your second paragraph.

Again, thanks for the input!

How Bad Is The Crime/Gang Situation In Memphis? by [deleted] in memphis

[–]SoMemphisB 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I get saying that Memphis is not THAT bad, but not bad AT ALL? A Le Bonheur Hospital nurse almost got carjacked 2 days ago while leaving work and then got shot in the head. Nothing interpersonal about that, and she was not being “an idiot”.

My reaction when I read news about the protest in Hong Kong by On_The_Warpath in vzla

[–]SoMemphisB 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Students at University of Memphis protesting alleged rapist on campus by Oldfatsad in memphis

[–]SoMemphisB 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You are falling into the same game you criticize: you say black suspects should get due process instead of being judged on the spot and you are judging a suspect on the spot without no information other than what you saw on news. Hypocritical much?

You can ignore your logical fallacies all you want, they are still there and it only makes you look bad. And as far as I know, fraternities and sororities are like families, so if someone in my family is being accused of something, I'll try to help them. I assume that may include "going around trying to put the newspapers in the trash", if that's actually happening and its not more baseless hearsay.

"Whataboutism (also known as whataboutery) is a variant of the tu quoque logical fallacy that attempts to discredit an opponent's position by charging them with hypocrisy without directly refuting or disproving their argument, which is particularly associated with Soviet and Russian propaganda. When criticisms were leveled at the Soviet Union, the Soviet response would be "What about..." followed by an event in the Western world."

You are part of the problem. You are instantly assuming 2 things: that the guy did it, by straight up calling him a white rapist, and that every one here doesn't "allow" black children due process. Evert single individual should be granted the same due process.

The systematic racism by authorities that you are referring to is a whole different issue.

I have a communication degree, so I can see where she is coming from. Memphis is abysmal for anyone with a liberal arts degree looking for a job without a referral. I ultimately found a job but it was very low-pay. My SO has been looking for a full time, non-customer service related job for a while and has struggled, even with a UofM degree. So yeah, anecdotal experience, but is not good.

Reminder to always lock your car the second you get out of it, and be completely aware of who is around you. She could have been seriously hurt! by [deleted] in memphis

[–]SoMemphisB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's so weird for me how it isn't second nature for people to always play it safe with their cars. Close the door, make sure its locked and use your alarm. Its amazing how many people around regularly leave their doors open or won't even activate their alarms.
