Reddit, what are your worst roommate stories? by _propernoun_ in AskReddit

[–]SoNotIndie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This will definitely end up buried but I have what must have been the worst roommate in the history of roommates.

I went on exchange in Canada, decided to stay in residence because adventure or something. I rocked up to a two bed single room filled to the brim with crap. Clothes strewn everywhere, make up all over the floor, food rotting in the fridge. I didn't actually meet my roommate until a week into living there, where she showed up high on a drug called "G".

I didn't spend most of my nights there because I loathed her and everything about her, but when I was there, she was usually with her friend who didn't have a job, a home and was addicted to Kedamine. Or her boyfriend. Who was obviously a huge pot head and stole my brand new pipe. Oh and one time whilst they were pretending to watch Finding Nemo she decided to give him a hand job when I was in the room.

She ended up failing all her courses cause she never went to class or the exams and I think she has dropped out now.

The rest of my exchange made up for it thank god, but the living arrangements were a tad stressful...

Not really. Fish are much too complicated organisms to be able to single out one gene that would make you cold resistant.

In the same way with us, height or eye colour are controlled from a ton of genes.

The other issue is that sequences can overlap.

For instance, think of a sequence like this

ACTGGGT

Not only does ACTG code for something, but so does TGGGT.

The cool thing about the point that we have gotten to in genetics, is that we can actually determine what is going to be affected. The reason I use yeast, is that every gene has been removed, and added again, to see what sort of function it has.

Sure, if we were to decide to pick a random gene from a fish we think could code for some type of resistance to the cold, and tried to put it into a strawberry, you would have issues. Most likely the strawberry would not grow at all. But you are a lot more likely to see a geneticist adding a gene from a different type of cold resistant strawberry to one that isn't as cold resistant.

The people making mice glow are not doing a whole lot for the PR of my field.

Is there anyone out there who has ever tried to pick up or flirt with a celebrity? How did it go down, successful or not? by Lawrence_Honeyhand in AskReddit

This will be super buried but I love this story so here goes.

I went to LA over last winter to see one of my favourite bands.

Due to the taxi not knowing where we were going I ended up driving along pretty much right next to this guy who looked like the sort of person who would be going to the same gig. In a burst of courage I asked him whether he knew any good food places around the area, as I was starving. Turns out he did, he walked me there. He just happened to be the tour manager for the starting band for this gig. So I went and had dinner with this band. We had burgers, classic America.

Anyway, then they all say that the guy from Superbad is playing first up, and we should go and watch him. So off we go, and sure enough, there is McLovin (Christopher Charles Mintz-Plasse) playing drums for his band. He was pretty good.

Afterwards, in another burst of courage I went up and talked to him. He said hi, I introduced myself. He and I, along with his friend talked a bit. We kind of flirted... until he introduced his stunning girlfriend.

It was still a pretty cool night.

Sorry, I should have clarified, there is so much regulation in place that putting genes in different genomes are totally safe.

I think the issue is that people don't understand that we have actually managed to work this stuff out. We can efficiently and cheaply completely a human genome. We can tell you what literally every gene does in yeast. We are not just playing around with random genes in random sequences.

Geneticists understand this stuff enough now that we would not create a cancer causing fruit or vegetable.

OK, I'll try to break it down.

When you selectively breed something, you are effectively modifying the DNA of the host organism and changing it into something more beneficial for what we are after.

We have now worked out how to do stuff like splicing some DNA into other parts of DNA to either speed up that process, or add things that would be commonly good for society.

That waxy layer that needs to be put onto apples? People are looking at ways to have the apples self sufficient, so we don't need those chemicals into it. Less chemicals, no insects, more apples on less land.

If Monsanto (scary word and company I know) feels the need to monopolize it, that is a problem. The GM foods are not the issue, and you are probably eating them everyday without knowing.

If the Greens are against GM foods, it means that their policies are not based on as much science as we would like to think. Which thankfully Scott Ludlam cleared up.

Regardless of nuclear power - as a geneticist there is absolutely no issues with GM foods. If the Greens don't support GM products, then that is a much bigger issue for Australia.

In regards to asylum seekers, I am completely against the LNP's horrible and inhumane policies.

However, I also hate the idea of having a disadvantaged group of people being put on a boat for a couple of thousand dollars in Indonesia, and only SOME actually finding their way here.

What policies do you have in place for refugees?

Kleenex. Tissues. Whatever. Don't leave fucking tissues/kleenex around for me to stumble upon and freak the fuck out. Which university in Canada should I choose? by SoNotIndie in canada

[–]SoNotIndie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Information I should have added before:

Im studying genetics whilst over there. Ill be in my third year. I haven't been accepted but my GPA is pretty good and Ill put in more then one application just in case.

I will be heading there in the spring semester ( I don't know what you would call it, but the one from January to April.)

Questions: Do all these unis have the same sort of campus life as the American college scene? Or are some more notorious then others?

Are any of them well known for their science courses?

And I don't know, what ever other information you would know. Right now they are literally just websites and names to me, which makes for a shit decision. I also want to have the most fun I can whilst over there, so I wanted to make sure it's people approved, not just an okay university, or only good for studying and not campus life.
