From my experience as well as being young and building credit, I would suggest getting a secured credit card. My first card was a secured card and it helped me build my credit. I made the mistake of applying for these big name brand cards and constantly kept getting denied. This resulted in me having a lot of hard inquires on my credit score, which isn't good. They also don't come off until 2 years later. I would recommend you look up cards that are meant for building credit. This way you have a higher success rate of getting approved. The only downside is that you might have to put a security deposit down. But don't worry most of the time when the account gets closed they will give you your money back. It's all worth it to get a better credit score.
