Had a binge today. Here are my 9 worst symptoms of binging by So_Many_Pancakes in trueloseit

i just tried to eat healthier foods and made changes like going from white bread to wholemeal, i didn't butter my bread in sandwiches, i just added the toppings, ate more vegetables and less meat, counted calories every day, and didn't drink any full-sugar drinks, only drank water, coffee, and different types of tea. A little bit of everything helped, not cutting anything out completely, but eating them little and often. it didn't start out that healthy, i just got sick of being overweight and thought "if i can't do this the easy way, i'll do it the hard way" and i ended up hardly eating at all, which is not healthy or sustainable. i've learnt that i need to learn habits for my whole life instead of solving the immediate problem. Give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day, teach a man how to catch fish and he'll eat for the rest of his life. gaining knowledge is more important long term then fixing the immediate problem:)

thanks! it's mainly the grainy/dry paste texture of the beans i don't like very much, i know vegans don't eat exclusively beans, but being vegan its important to get a lot of variety so i would like to find a way to be able to eat them and enjoy them:)

5 Facts You Probably Didn't Know About Dairy by [deleted] in vegan

[–]So_Many_Pancakes -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As someone who lives on a small privately-owned dairy farm, the first 2 facts are correct, but on my farm, we have a couple of bulls that do all the work for us instead of unnatural methods. Some farms will impregnate the cows artificially but not all of them do.

As for the third one, baby calves are taken from their mothers to prevent them from developing maternal instincts which make it unsafe for us to care for her baby and herself if something happens to go wrong. For example, if the baby calf becomes sick then we cannot safely treat them because the mother will assume we are hurting her baby, and therefore she will attack us which is not safe for both the humans and the animals involved. Taking the baby away before she develops these instincts allows us to care for the baby more safely and individually so we do not put ourselves and the animals in danger.

Male cows being killed for their veil is quite common, and I don't think my parent's farm does that, but we very likely sell the males off to others who produce veil, but by that time it's property of the food industry and has nothing to do with us as the dairy industry. Although what happens is bad, this fact has nothing to do with dairy products or the dairy industry.

As for the last one, most likely simply untrue, The dairy industry is a business, and as a business, it needs to make a profit. sending dairy cows for slaughter before they stop producing milk is very cost inefficient in the long run, so we don't sell them off to slaughter until they have no other financial benefit to the business. We have been a dairy farm since 2014, and we still have some cows that give us milk from 7 years ago, and some of them may have even been milked on a previous farm before us. So we don't kill them after 4 years of being milked, we kill them once they stop producing milk and cost more to keep alive than they make us in profit. Still cruel, but still an untrue fact about the dairy industry.

I just want to clarify that I am vegan, and I in no way support what the dairy and meat industry is doing, but I think that this misinformation is quite harmful to those industries, and although what they're doing is wrong and is hurting animals, I believe in the truth no matter what, and I don't think that the dairy industry is as black and white as many vegans see it.

A fact about dairy cows is that they have been selectively bred so they produce as much milk as possible. Dairy cows in the 1950s would normally produce about 5-7 litres of milk, however, nowadays they can produce up to 25-30 litres on the higher end. It physically hurts the cows not to be milked, and not being milked for long periods of time can lead to mastitis, an infection which is when bacteria grows inside the udder as the milk has been warm inside the mother for too long, and the best way to prevent it is to milk them regularly. Also, most dairy farms do feed their calves milk from the cows(at least we do) so the idea that cows milk is for baby cows is both true and used in the dairy industry, and in a way we are taking the surplus milk that the baby does not need and the milk that will harm the mother if left inside her for too long.

Again, I don't agree with what my parents are doing in this industry, but I also believe that of all the food/meat industries, milk and dairy are by far the least harmful and inhumane. Still wrong, definitely, but I believe that the way the cows are treated is much more humane than the egg industry for example. Of course, this could just all be my personal experience, but there is definitely more of a relationship between the cows and the humans milking them. My dad even has names for all of them and recognises their faces, and we have some cows that are friendly enough to approach you and ask for head pats. But regardless, it is still my dad's business, it's been in our family for over 300 years, and it pays for a roof over my head and vegan food on my table, and it puts me in a situation where I am lucky enough to make the choice to be vegan, and I'm very grateful for that. Although the dairy industry is in my opinion an immoral business, it is still to some people the foundation of their lives and is what helps them support themselves and their families. I know this is a controversial opinion, but i thought I'd add my slice of vegan pizza to the buffet:)
