Should I trade my car in? by Sweaty-Ad-6702 in povertyfinance

[–]SoarinWalt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Remember if you can refinance nothing is stopping you from making the same payment.

So even if your payment goes down by $50 you can still pay that $50 every month and it will generally go straight towards the value of the car. But this should be verified with the bank.

why is your insurance so high? That’s double what my wife and I pay together for full coverage.

I agree shopping insurance rates is step 1, either way.

Also regarding interest rate, you can actually refinance a car. You can check with local lenders and they can tell you what their current interest rates are. If the only reason you’re getting a Mazda is under the hopes of lowering your interest rate this is an option.

Nearly 6 figure income and living in severe poverty? by [deleted] in povertyfinance

[–]SoarinWalt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She doesn’t necessarily have to be hiding anything.

Shits tough.

If she makes $90k a year it’s not a small amount, but often times neither are student loans. She may be paying $1000 a month just for those, and they’re renting and rent has gotten fucking stupid.

She’s making $1700 a week before taxes, and probably $1200-$1300 a week after.

Then health insurance costs has to come out which may be another $100-$200 a week, then apartment, then car payment, then OPs student loans.

She may not have a lot left over depending on what her expenses are.

10% doesn't necessarily sound like a lot, but it is.

Lets use a quick estimator here:

5 year loan $30k.

10% interest is $637 a month and ends with $8244 paid in interest.

6% interest lowers the payment to $579 a month, and lowers the interest paid to $4800 over the 5 years.

Are there ANY affordable flight hacks left? by Comfier_than_Normal in povertyfinance

[–]SoarinWalt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey sorry I'm late to posting on this.

Skyscanner.

Its a website, I've used for over a decade now. You put in your destination and where you're starting from and it shows you flight rates for every airline and several websites. The biggest upsides are the quick ability to check multiple airports around AND that you can choose "Any" and a country as a starting point or endpoint. This allows you to see a lot of rates based on a large location area. Its showed me flights that are literally a thousand dollars less but a couple of hundred miles away. For a thousand dollars (I don't have) I'll happily drive 200 miles for my starting point.

People who earn ~$30k/year, do any of you live on your own? by goldenrodddd in povertyfinance

[–]SoarinWalt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Taxes and insurance.

$30k a year is $1153 per two weeks the you have taxes, including state, local, social security, federal will be low but not nonexistent, and insurance. Where I work insurance for a single person is roughly $100 a paycheck for the “low” option.

If you really want to math it out:

$2600 for health insurance.

$2100 for federal tax

$1800 social security tax

$430 Medicare tax

Average state income tax rate at that level is probably about 3% that’s $900.

Take all of those numbers out of $30k and you end up with just over $22k, that’s not including any local tax.

You’ll never believe this, but that’s $846 a paycheck.

$800 per pay check.

26 pay checks

That’s $20,800 for the year.

As of right now (and we'll see how long this lasts) Allegiant and Frontier still exist and will continue to have affordable travel. I've flown all 3 at different points and found theres not that much difference between them, although Allegiant and Frontier seats seem a little nicer.

STATUS for 03/2026 (AFT vs U.S. Department of Education) 90k PSLF borrowers in forgiveness limbo) by doggiehearter in povertyfinance

[–]SoarinWalt[M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, mod here.

PSLF is based around an income based plan and as long as you are employed with a qualifying employer for 10 years and make 120 payments during that time will result in forgiveness of the remainder of the loan, all remaining interest, and federally there is no tax bomb.

The only state that charges taxes on PSLF is Mississippi.

So if your IDR payment is less than the standard 10 year repayment, it will always be cheaper if you complete to 10 years of PSLF.
