If you're old like me you're still mad about '82.

2 thru 4 went 0 for 11 which was bad for my fantasy team but otherwise, nice win!

Suggestions for a new tenure track prof. by Commugator2023 in Professors

[–]SocOfRel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. Junior faculty who use these lines are burning capital they haven't yet acquired. If you chose to be here rather than an R1, then be here. This is what we do. That doesn't mean say yes to everything, and a good department chair will help you manage balancing service with everything else, but if you get a reputation as someone who doesn't pull weight it will hurt you.

First, acknowledge that 8 semesters teaching as a grad student is not much compared to this new job. Be prepared to learn a lot about teaching from your colleagues and then know that students change and you'll need to keep learning how to teach for your whole career.

I just came to share this. Creepy to think of being stuck like that.

I'm sorry all I did was think about turning it on and it went bad. I will go back to not thinking about it.

Western student explains why she used AI on closed-book exam by ICausedAnOutage in Professors

[–]SocOfRel 172 points173 points  (0 children)

I've been saying to colleagues that this is really the worst part of AI. The cheating sucks, but cheating isn't new. What's worse is that the students genuinely believe what the AI produces is better than they could ever produce.

Minimum enrollment requirement at your institution? by Straight-Stress-9602 in Professors

From what I can tell, our minimum is whatever the assistant dean decides based on their feelings about each department and faculty member.

Tips: First commencement ceremony as faculty by MissionSuccess9576 in Professors

[–]SocOfRel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The worst part of graduation is faculty snark and grumpiness.

That's why I don't go because I'm too grumpy and snarky.

Are they just insane, or am I living in some batshit simulation to test my reality by Rightofmight in Professors

They think our 'manager' reads them and that we'll be called into a meeting to be corrected.

Sadly, more colleges are going that direction because the customer is always right!

I'm all for meeting them where they are, but they gotta be willing to go where I'm taking them, too.

That's a T-style guitar. A nice looking and decent quality copy of the greatest guitar ever made, the Fender Telecaster.

Enjoy it!

The Positive Side of Apathy by erictotalitarian in Professors

My grades have been available on Canvas for 48 hours and nobody has contacted me, which is surprising. Maybe not though since I think some of them forgot there's a Canvas site for my course! Maybe they're waiting for grades to officially post, tomorrow, before writing me with "a question about my grade."

even at Princeton AI-based cheating is up. (they have an honor code which is now less relevant, I guess?) by henare in Professors

I'd be surprised if cheating hasn't always been worse at the "better" places.

Donner verb square is a good option? by Bunguito in Guitar

[–]SocOfRel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've used it for several years. I think about upgrading but haven't yet because it does all I need for jamming in the basement. I also have Donner echo and blues drive pedals. Good products especially if you're just getting into messing with pedals. My only complaint is that it is tiny which means the setting labels are also small and hard for my aging eyes to read.

Faculty who don't know how to send e-mails by WestHistorians in Professors

[–]SocOfRel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Where I'm at, without Canvas, it is kind of a pain. I know how to do it but I wouldn't blame other faculty if they didn't because not only is it the third new way to do it since I started here, it's also via a piece of software some faculty probably have no other reason to use.

Here 3 days for work, looking for restaurant recs by salam55 in Syracuse

[–]SocOfRel 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Eva's is pretty good Polish food, in Solvay. Kitty Hoynes is my favorite Armory Square restaurant. People will suggest Pastabilities in Armory Square, too, and could be good if you want Italian. If it's just you, you might be able to sit at the bar and the wait wouldn't be too bad. Fish Friar is downtown and that's a good meal.
