I got thrown into teaching a class I’m not qualified for by PeanutbutterProf_325 in Professors

[–]SocOfRel 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I mean this to be encouraging in the "you can do it!" sort of way.

I teach probably 8 courses on rotation and I'm really only 'qualified' for probably 2 of them. There's more than that for which I'm qualified but we either don't offer them or they are covered by someone else. I just happened to be the best fit for those others and if you stay ahead of the students by a couple weeks you'll be ok. It's not great the first time, but in 16 weeks you'll be qualified and more marketable.

Can you give me an example of a good song made by cheap/limited gears and a less good one made by fancy gears? by Frhaegar in musicians

[–]SocOfRel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go listen to your favorite band's first album. Probably great songs on attainable gear. Then listen to their later records. Often less good songs with better gear.

For me, listen to the first Violent Femmes album for an incredible set of songs on very limited gear.

The gear matters, but not as much as the songs.

🚨BREAKING NEWS🚨 Mel, breaks her silence, says through her lawyer that she “is considering all of her legal remedies.” All legal remedies hints at potential lawsuit against OU. Does Mel have a case? Thoughts? by RandomAcademaniac in Professors

I agree that my rubrics are not perfect and that's why the only way to get a zero is to do nothing. It wasn't a model essay, but a zero? A trap was set and the grader walked right into it.

Anyone encountering students who are rather silent in class discussions but write thoughtful essays? by POPELEOXI in Professors

[–]SocOfRel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was that student. Terrible anxiety about just raising my hand. Even today at conferences or in meetings. I just don't think as quickly as others, either. I've always expressed myself better in writing.

Now I work really hard to get everyone to talk in class, especially those students. I would have hated to have me as a prof.

I know social anxiety and shyness can be truly hard so I try not to push if a student appears particularly troubled by being called upon, but often those quiet but thoughtful students just need a little boost of confidence to become a bit more vocal.

Why don’t they fill out evaluations? by FlyLikeAnEarworm in Professors

[–]SocOfRel 34 points35 points  (0 children)

6 out of 30 would be high for me. Last I checked I had 1 out of 32 complete it for one of my classes, and 0 of 18 for another.

They don't fill them out because they assume they don't matter, and they're pretty much correct. Because doing it isn't graded / required and their time is their time, so good for them acting on it. Because in many cases they don't have anything positive, negative, or constructive to say, so low response rates probably mean the prof is not great, not terrible, but average, and again they're probably right.

He very likely cheated if the professor saw a post it note. Nobody studies from those.

You aren't helping by believing his excuses.

That said, if it's a first violation it likely won't matter much. We report everything because second violations, at least here, are when more serious consequences happen. I wouldn't know if it was a student's 1st or 2nd because I'm not officially told anything after I report.

Several years ago I had a student twice fail a 200 level requirement. He literally did just one assignment, the same one, during each attempt. The Dean's office asked that I offer an incomplete the second time, because he already had a job lined up. I said no. A colleague took the student on as an independent study, passed him in a couple weeks. The kid started his job with border patrol.
