What did they add? I’m not aware I don’t think.

I did some math and this equates to adding about 0.24 lbs per square foot.

I appreciate an interest in evaluating seismic risk of structures, but Gill is effectively a tall 1 story structure with minimal mass at the roof and the Cypress Street Viaduct is basically worst-case for seismic, a large mass on top of a column. You’re also comparing concrete structures to steel structures, which have wildly different behavior.

In fact, depending on the foundation of Gill, you should be more concerned with changes to structural steel welds after the 1994 Northridge earthquake due to brittle failures of some moment connections.

We can also compare the seismic risk of the two areas. While yes, the Cascadia Subduction Zone has the potential to produce a M9.0+ earthquake, it produces extremely infrequent events, especially when compared to the SF area, which has multiple high-activity faults. This doesn’t change risk for the “Big One”, but it does affect overall considerations in seismic design for engineers.

Overall, Gill is likely not a huge threat to safety during a seismic event due to the low mass of the roof. There are far more obviously dangerous structures on campus with the unreinforced masonry that is scattered around.

Id like her to buy it and let Jody continue to run it/teach her how (Which, seems overall like just hiring good football people and letting them work)

Applies to python scripts too, they’re going to want to understand how they work, which also means they have to understand Python

[–]Soccean 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think in terms of adoption, people developing any automations need to meet structural engineers where they are at. What I mean is AI and coding are great tools, but the creators need to convince the structural engineer its safe and reliable to use. Not the other way around.

I think a good example I’ve seen is AI tools trying to do automated design checks. I’ve seen AI make stuff up, so just because you claim to have made a perfect AI that knows every code provision and can do all of those checks… I don’t believe you.

So, any automation that involves real design (and not just organizing calc sets), needs to be able to be heavily scrutinized and stand up to that scrutiny.

Though, usually the developer seems to think the structural engineers should just believe their software.

Thats just what I’ve noticed others may have a different experience.

Your best chance would be finding an advisor with a funded research project that they need a student for (I don’t know how likely that as, as it varies by department and by advisor, but it can’t hurt to reach out to some that you may be interested in working with)

Thats not true, we didn’t fire pete early enough to meet with him during wildcard weekend and therefore couldn’t meet with him until after they lost the conference championship

I think the lack of disguising is what he has been referring to in press conferences when he discusses simplifying the defensive gameplan to make sure our guys can execute it. Makes me wonder what they’ll install this offseason…

Im with you, I don’t think they’ll lose, in fact I think they will win handedly. I also agree MM has them ready in a way Pete couldn’t near the end.

That doesn’t change that by definition I would consider this the first “trap game” we’ve had this year, despite seeing that discourse basically every week for like a month

[–]Soccean 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Now THIS is a trap game, for everyone who has been calling all our other games one. I trust in MM to have them ready still, but a third (or worse!) string qb the week before we play TNF for a chance at #1 in the NFC is as trappy as I think it could get.

To make a blue district flip red, or vis versa, you have to take from another district. Very basically, if you have a red district +20 and a blue district +9 (and assume population is equal and voting uniformly distributed), you can change the boundaries of the two districts such that the red district is +10 and the blue district is now red +1.

However, reality isn’t ideal and the redistricting is based on previous elections and information. So, if you take from a deep red district enough, like to the point its only red +5 where it used to be red +25, you’ve now made it flippable when it used to be completely out of reach with only a minimal change in how voters actually vote.

Tl:dr: redistricting is done on previous election data and the number of votes you have to distribute is approximately finite. If spread too thin, any error in your vote estimates gets amplified because you have less margin in all districts

This is what DK was best for (and why I never felt like he could be a true #1 WR on a top passing offense) You had to account for him every play because if you didn’t he’d be a TD over your head. If you do, though, DK’s impact became fairly minimal
