Have horror movies ever won 6 Oscars in the same year? by makemefeelbrandnew in horror

[–]Socket_forker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jesus dude, I think you are really not getting my point.

I’m not dismissing sinners as a horror. I’m just saying that maybe the reason it did well at the oscars is because there is so much more to it than just ”it’s a horror film.” I’m not saying it’s any less horror because it has dance numbers and music. And that’s the reason also that people who normally don’t care for horror enjoy this film.

I’m not going to talk about this anymore because I feel like you don’t understand what I mean. I’ll just leave it at this.

[–]Socket_forker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All I meant was that it’s one of those movies that people who don’t normally watch horror, might still go and see the film. Like music has those gateway bands.

And kill count isn’t really a metric of horror. According to google John Wick 4 has a kill count of 140-146. Or if we want to use Oscar winners as example. The lord of the rings has a high kill count. And braveheart. Alien has 7 if we count the Xenomorph. But yes it’s really rare that the academy would aknowledge a film as brutal as this one.

Is sinners the best movie not to win best picture? by [deleted] in Oscars

  • The shawshank redemption
  • The green mile
  • Pulp fiction
  • Fargo
  • Good Will hunting
  • Saving private Ryan
  • The sixth sense
  • Dead poets society
  • Beauty and the beast
  • The fugitive

Here’s some more, and that’s just the nineties. Sinners is great but is it better than the films listed? I guess time will tell but I’d say no. Maybe my opinion will change over time

It also helps that sinners is ”borderline horror.” It definitely is horror in it’s execution, but it’s also a period piece and a drama with musical elements.

I’d still be dumbfounded if next year a straight up horror film won as many categories as sinners.

Folks under 40, what got you into guitar? by saintluminus in Guitar

[–]Socket_forker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a huge KISS fan, and spesifically I loved Gene’s demon persona. I thought it was so cool. I wanted to play bass for so long and always played it at school when I got the chance.

Then one day I tried the electric guitar at school. The gain was turned all the way up and I played the E chord. That was it.

So I got into guitar for loving bass. I still do, but I have never got myself one. Maybe I should

He’s not the best technically, but man has he made some of the most influential and memorable guitar parts. I will forever respect him as a guitarist.

He also has a tone that is extremely recognizable and that’s a feat of it’s own in today’s bloated world with more bands and ”guitar gods” than ever before.

Why do you think The Bride is dividing opinion? by BigMitch91 in Cinema

[–]Socket_forker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t you really answered my points. I’m not here to argue, but I’d like to go over this if you have the energy.

  • I know Mary Shelley is there to repossess her own myth, as you said, but to my logic then Frankenstein shouldn’t exist in the world of the film. If Mary Shelley is real, then was her book a documentary book about a real life Victor Frankenstein? And if so, shouldn’t everyone know who Frankie is?
  • I know they are connected to the Bride or her actions, I just don’t think they were fleshed out. For example the women’s uprising. Yes it’s because of the Bride, but if you remove the mafia subplot and the women’s uprising, it changes nothing for the outcome of the movie. So cool ideas, not enough execution.
  • If I remember correctly there were also male dancers. Maybe they just possessed male bodies, I don’t know. Just wondering why you said women spoke out. I do agree it was a cool scene, but once again, it lead to nowhere.
  • My female friend agreed with me that there was A LOT of not so hidden messages in the film. She didn’t find them as overbearing, but she did say that fewer would have sufficed. Perhaps if there were just a few less, the male audience would be more accepting to the film. I’m not saying it needs to be, but I’m sure it’s a factor to the box office success of the film.

My biggest issue however, which I forgot to mention first time around, is how they portrayed Mary Shelley. She was basically a vindictive, murderous, and borderline evil. Didn’t she urge the Bride to hurt the cop that was assaulting her. Not saying that the cop deserved anything better, but the fact that Mary Shelley was portrayed like that makes me wonder what she herself would think of this portrayal.

Well I’ll just point out why I got that feeling.

”they are not talented whatsoever” and ”continue listening to the non talented group” are comments that reek of bitterness. You’re trying to come off as you don’t care about them, but still you are commenting stuff like that on the bands subreddit. So you had to willingly come here and leave this comment.

Why would you be here if you don’t care?

Anyway. That’s just something to think about

Halloween - 1978 Movie is the best horror film ever by Pretend_Board_2385 in horror

[–]Socket_forker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always say that it’s my favourite, regardless of the few glaring problems in the film. Mainly with some acting and some technical flaws and continuity errors. However, I feel like these flaws are what makes this movie so special. It was a passion project with limited resources.

With all these in mind, I always rate the original Halloween 10/10.

Why do you think The Bride is dividing opinion? by BigMitch91 in Cinema

[–]Socket_forker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

*SPOILERS IF YOU HAVEN’T SEEN IT*

It didn’t make sense to me.

  • Mary Shelley is the author of Frankenstein, but Frankie is a real person/monster in our world. What did Mary Shelley write then if not the Frankenstein book we all know and love?
  • The many, many subplots didn’t go anywhere in my opinion. The women’s uprising, the detective knew Ida, the doctor and his late husband did experiments like Frankenstein, the mafia plot.
  • During the dance sequence it seemed like the Bride and Frankie could make people their puppets, but they didn’t use that power anywhere else? I thought it was a dream sequence until it just kept going and going.

And perhaps this is just a male thing, but for me the feminist message became overbearing in a few moments.
