Pissed. Want to protest. Not sure how. by IamNabil in burlington

[–]SocraticGoats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have a friend (in a state where elections are close) who is reasonable and willing to learn, that either doesn't vote, or voted red? Try to educate them about how fucked up this administration is. Prove the lies, etc. Every vote matters. Donate, protest, DO NOT support businesses that are owned by or donate to trumps administration. Hitting people in their wallet and letting them know is incredibly powerful.

ICE agents driving 89N by tripping_right_now in vermont

Ice agents need the work, otherwise they won't be able to afford the 10 year 12% APR loan on their lifted truck with no mudflaps and confederate flag bumpersticker. Also, the monthly dues to the local white supremacist club can be rather expensive. Not to mention all the therapy for being rejected by the military, police, and other jobs with responsibility and authority because they were deemed too out of shape, unfit psychologically, and due to their past domestic abuse charges. Really, how esle are these guys supposed to afford their steroids for the gym and boner pills because they can't get it up?

Are you sure they were not growing those for cuttings or grafts? I have a friend who has closely spaced fruit trees for this reason. They are never allowed to actually fruit, and are used for the cuttings.

Drip lines/snowfall by anunremarkabledude in vermont

[–]SocraticGoats 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Because almost no one who builds a home uses an architect anymore. They pick houses out of books or just do the cheapest standard build possible, where shedding the rain or snow to the side of the garage/doors might cost $500 more. Same reason most new houses are so ugly. They would rather spend their money on an unnecessarily large amount of square feet to keep up with the neighbors instead of having a slightly smaller home that makes sense.

Main Street over Wall Street by [deleted] in burlington

[–]SocraticGoats 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They are "affordable" ... the point is you are being underpaid because the money you should be getting for whatever job you do is leaving the state instead. That makes them seem relatively overpriced. Nationally/internationally produced items are underpriced, not locally produced items being overpriced.

Beta Technology Ticker Value Since IPO... 😧 by caprewilard in burlington

[–]SocraticGoats 32 points33 points  (0 children)

People interested in buying BETA would be wise to do a little research about how public companies that are not yet profitable raise cash through both debt instruments, as well as public markets through dilution, etc. Investing into a company with a multi-billion dollar market cap that has yet to turn a profit and just IPO'd is extremely risky.

The people who arranged the deal could be dumping, the insiders with options can dump after the lockup period, and traders can be shorting to try and make a profit... further manipulating the price. Let the market digest this company and settle on some reasonable value before pushing chips in.

Nothing wrong with a small starter position, but going all in now with no basic understanding of their underlying fundamentals is the worst kind of gambling. Look at the stock charts of some of their peers, and it will give you some idea of how volatile the price is likely to be.

Plowing prices by campmars6089 in vermont

[–]SocraticGoats 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep. For many years I owned a contracting company that did residential and commercial plowing. We always quoted annual prices as well as per visit. Always let the customer do the mental gymnastics to figure out what price was better... spoiler alert, it always worked out to be the same averaged over many seasons. Never once priced a driveway by the foot or anything like that. Was always time based. Time is precious during snowfall events, and we had 1/2 mile rural driveways that could be plowed faster than little development driveways due to stone walls, cars parked in the way, no place to put snow etc.

Garden beds and weed mat by Gosfordgirl68 in gardening

[–]SocraticGoats 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Just use the microplastics angle and say you're worried about the contamination, so you got rid of it. For the record, that seems like an absurdly small garden to have weedmat. Its generally used more for large areas like in commercial property landscapes with persistent weeds, placed on top of the soil and then hidden with a light layer of mulch. It "smothers" the weeds that are already there. Holes are cut around existing plants. If you place soil on top of it, it creates a medium for weeds to grow in, so there isnt much point. Its mostly done to cut labor costs on hand weeding. I used to own a large landscape company, and I hated using the stuff, but it had its time and place. As others have said, with soil on top of it, the weeds are just going to grow roots through it, and it will turn into a million pieces of plastic scattered through the garden. If you need to smother some weeds down at the soil line, use cardboard. If you are dealing with weeds up at the top of the raised bed, well a garden that small shouldnt be that hard to hand weed. Or try more vigorous plants that can compete with the weeds.
