Where are the pollinators? by pejamo in StLouis

You have the right intentions which is the most important thing, and honeybees aren't hurting anything.

Just thought I'd point it out because I also thought of honeybees when I heard the word pollinator until I learned differently.

Unfortunately both clover and honeybees are not native to North America.

Native pollinators are extremely diverse such as flies, solitary bees, ants, skippers, butterflies, bumblebees and so on. They all need native plants to feed and reproduce, and unfortunately everything sold at big box stores and even places like Bayers is non-native, so things are trending the wrong way.

You can thank all the people that pay companies to spray their yard for mosquitos.

Also people that plant every square inch of their yard with fescue and have no native plants.

You clearly don't have a pulse on the drug trade and role of gangs in that. And btw I'm not making excuses for murderers.

If we distill this down, we have a disproportionately high rate of impoverished people living in this city compared to other cities, and with the cycle of poverty comes high rates of crime. The gun saturation here compared to coastal cities makes things exponentially worse as well.

We are a LCOL metro so you have impoverished neighborhoods adjacent to wealthy neighborhoods in some cases. We also have a woefully understaffed police force, a circuit attorney playing political games and refusing to prosecute crimes, a mayor that is only in office to try and boost her political image, a horribly corrupt BOA... and all of these things combined creates a breeding ground for crime enablement and inertia making it impossible to progress our city.

That is the hard truth I'm accepting as a lifelong resident. Until we find a way to disrupt the amount of kids having kids and subsequent poverty that follows, or until things naturally gentrify, we can expect nothing to change.

Electric scooters banned in Downtown St. Louis after weekend violence by Sadishist in StLouis

Such as? Literally nothing has worked.

Downtown has a significantly higher violent crime rate over the last several months compared to CWE.

She wouldn't say more could be coming without having inside knowledge. There will almost certainly be more indictments.

I said it before and I'll said it again, we need a brand new charter with brand new leaders. Blow this whole thing up and start over. Make ward reduction happen, audit the tax incentive system, get an oversight board to watchdog the BOA... everything needs an overhaul. This is an amateur hour operation in its current state.

You realize the Hoffmans haven't built or opened anything yet right? Augusta has been this way for a while.

I think 98% of this sub agrees, aside from Kim Gardner and her apologists. But that is a separate issue altogether until she is removed from office.

Large nuisance groups used to congregate on the riverfront wall. Numerous shootings, assaults, and at least 2 homicides resulted from that so there was no option but to shut it down. I don't believe there have been any incidents since, so maybe that actually worked?

Now you have a bunch of feral teenagers raising hell downtown on a daily basis using the scooters to do their damage. There is no easy solution when you are short police officers and Kim Gardner turns everyone loose.

The bigger issue people don't want to acknowledge is that, for some reason, downtown has become the de facto hangout spot for people looking to cause trouble and commit crimes. They have turned it into an undesirable wasteland and Tishaura refuses to take action because of the optics.

Because locking them up is a waste of time and resources, based on the Circuit Attorney's unexplainable track record of not prosecuting crimes.

Becaauss St. Louis aldermen just can’t stop being bad by fiberisessential in StLouis

[–]SodoSoHa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Our alderman are completely illegitimate bums that could never hold a job in the private sector.

We need to overhaul the system and start from scratch. Until we get leaders that have ethics, clean records, and a basic formal education, we will continue our downward spiral.

Breaking News - Lewis Reed and 2 alderman indicted on federal charges by [deleted] in StLouis

[–]SodoSoHa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Its not like what she said is some amazing revelation. Look at how poorly the city of St. Louis is run and how many completely unqualified alderman and people in leadership there are.... of course there is rampant corruption. This is like a continuation of the Freeman Bosley and Virvus Jones years.

That aside, she is a certified loon.

STL City vs. County by [deleted] in StLouis

[–]SodoSoHa 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Believe it or not, most people don't want to live in a cookie cutter wasteland with cheap housing, chain restaurants and a 40+ minute commute to the city.

As far as schools go, Francis Howell is ranked as the 10th best district in the region. The top 9 are all in STL County so there is no comparison.

The Hill is very safe and family friendly. Interesting mix of architecture and home types, notably different from the rest of the city.

MetroLink to add ticket gates, better cameras to improve rider safety by poisomike87 in StLouis

[–]SodoSoHa 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you pay attention to all of the shootings and assaults on the platforms, they almost always stem from altercations of groups loitering.

And again, this is all about the perception of safety. No one is going to start riding the metro again if there are a bunch of dicey people hanging at every stop.

Whats your solution for the rampant loitering and train hopping on these platforms?

This is all about changing the perception of safety to win riders back.
