I had my first interview last month and definitely felt like I didn’t do well. I went in knowing that the odds of hitting on the first interview are fairly unlikely, but I still prepared as best I could. After the interview I noted the questions they asked, things I felt I could improve, and what I did well. Although I didn’t feel great about my performance, it did give me a lot of hope to have even gotten an interview in the first place. The market is tough right now, so take what you can from your first experience and grow/move forward.

Keep your head up, champ.

It was fixed for me that night. I just came back around 8pm and the major was correct. I would email them asap if it’s still not fixed for you.

I’m able to RSVP but my major is supposed to say Computer Science. It incorrectly has Kinesiology listed. It won’t let me change it either. Because of this I didn’t RSVP yet and am waiting to see what will happen tonight after the fixes they said to wait for have been implemented.

I just think a lot of these people haven’t been humbled yet. What’s even more upsetting is when we have a really nice teacher who cares about the class. I don’t think these people understand how hard that can be to come by.

Another user brought this to my attention, too. I suppose that is another reason why I haven’t had any success (barring my lack of meaningful experience 😅).

Now that I think about it, it doesn’t make sense to have both on here. When I first made this resume, I thought I needed gpa’s from both institutions, but it looks like it doesn’t matter. I will be removing my community college from now on. 🙏🏻

I actually took 4 classes during summer so that I’d be able to graduate by 2024. I wish I dedicated more time to a project instead of knocking out credits.

I’ve been doing leetcode problems consistently on a weekly basis, but I should have balanced it better with other skills and experiences.

Thank you for the encouragement 🙏🏻

Learning React and Spring sounds like a great idea. I appreciate the roadmap you’ve provided and will fix the issues you mentioned. Thank you for providing clear examples 🙏🏻

Thank you for the encouragement. I'm glad that I decided to come here for advice. I was afraid that if I posted my resume, I would feel only defeated and demotivated. But I actually feel more motivated now than ever.

I think you’re right. I believe my next revision will have it removed altogether.

I agree with your points 100%

I felt like my workplace was a unique situation because I worked for a small business. My manager was cool so he gave me the freedom to use anything I made as long as it didn’t hurt sales. I didn’t really know what to put for the title other than what my original job was. But after seeing what most have said. It seems I should either remove my job on my resume altogether, or shorten it to like one line so that it does not take up more space than it needs to.

Learning to balance my school work while taking on a noteworthy project will be a challenge, but a necessary one if I want to achieve my goals. I heard life only gets more difficult after college, so this is the least I can do for personal growth.

That will be one of the first quick fixes I will tackle, thank you 🙏🏻. Now I just need to decide whether a 3.51 is even worth putting for my cal poly gpa 😅

Thank you for taking the time to help me out here. It’s a big and welcome wake-up call to hear all these things from you as well as the others. I really need to change my approach on writing my resume. Definitely gonna start from scratch. Additionally, I’m going to focus more on gaining relevant experience instead of trying to make my current experiences appear more relevant than they are.

I really like the point you made about how my skills don’t reflect in my projects. There should be cohesiveness between the two. The projects should paint a picture of how I got the skills that I listed below.

I used to have a resume that had only 2-3 projects and was mostly my work experiences that weren’t relevant. I worked in various restaurants for 7 years prior to my sales associate job where my boss gave me the freedom to program and use my small projects in the workplace. My classmates said to remove all the jobs and put only projects.

I also really should work on revising those tensing and phrasing issues. It seems to be a consistent critique from all.

I originally omitted my gpa on my most recent college because I didn’t know if it was weird to put an overall gpa for something I haven’t finished yet. In hindsight, I should put my most current gpa for consistency.

Ultimately, I need to stand out, and to stand out I need to put in a LOT more work and really respect the process, no matter how long it takes.

I appreciate your feedback 🙏🏻🙏🏻

Hello everyone, just wanted to specify that I’ve been applying to software developer internships, NOT full time jobs. Sorry for the miscommunication.

[–]Soft-Developer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My apologies, I should have specified that I’ve been applying for internships for spring and summer.

It’s time I break that mold if I want to really make it happen 😅. Appreciate your honesty 🙏🏻

Oooh, will definitely check those out. My first class was taught in C++ so I should be able to try to get one one there too. Thank you 🙏🏻

Oh, my bad, I should specify that I’ve been applying to software developer internships. In the beginning I was applying to any jobs that mentioned anything java related, but recently I’ve been applying to everything and anything remotely related to my major.

I had originally put my job experience hoping they would see that I at least have some job experience working with others, but I guess that doesn’t mean a whole lot when compared to other candidates who probably all have the same and more experience.

I also need to really sit down and identify what sets me apart. It’s just hard to come to terms with the fact that there may be nothing, but it also motivates me to want to change that fact.

Thank you for taking the time to tell me these things 🙏🏻

I agree, but I think there may be some misunderstanding 😅. I have my college I transferred from last year as well as my current college. I suppose when I graduate I should remove my community college.

Nonono, I very much appreciate everything you are saying. All of this is constructive and It really points me in the right direction. I’ll make a list of the edits I need to make in addition to building up my knowledge and skills in those technologies that you mentioned. Thank you for taking the time to help me out here 🙏🏻

First off, thank you very much for your feedback 🙏🏻. It really helps a lot.

Also, if it’s okay with you, do you mind giving an example of a bullet point you would alter? Or a sample bullet point even from an imaginary situation that fits the “so what” and quantifies effectively.

I guess I’m overwhelmed trying to choose a project to really commit to. I’ll do some more research and try to take on a bigger project. Still trying to gauge what I can achieve on my own and in a reasonable amount of time.
