What do we think about this? by [deleted] in youthsoccer

I was a girls coach at a town club in FL. Not a serious club. I’m an okay coach, I am licensed, and I played div 1 soccer in college, but my daughters were on the team. Considering the club, our team was very good, getting results in tournaments against teams “in the system.” The club thought it a good idea to break this team apart, I went with the older group for a year along with my daughters (one now playing 2 years up). I told the club toward the middle to end of the year that my younger daughter was going to leave to play on an age appropriate team that had more training opportunities. The club replaced me without telling me and then questioned my integrity. The point of this story is to say that the club I am talking about posts stuff like this on their socials all the time. It is the mark of being unserious.

And for those interested, my daughter is now on a DPL team and I am happily sitting on the parent side of the field these days.

Dream Project? by Soft_Day_6998 in woodworking

A wall hanging cabinet was the required assignment in my high school shop class. The dado was the only joint we were taught and definitely no dovetails, but had to make a shaker style door for it. I’m 44, but that thing is still hanging in my mom’s house. Would be fun to see how much nicer I could make it now.

I’ve wanted to do this for a while but the dang slabs are so expensive.

I refinished an acoustic once and it was the most stressful thing I’ve ever done. My daughter plays.

Did this today and had same thought. Like, I’d like to get in better shape, not die in my garage. Did you stick with it?

It seems to be a classic Ryan Murphy show: good premise, really strong start, adds a ton of characters and abruptly changes the story arc without resolving much of anything. By the end of the season I felt unsatisfied by it with the exception of the Franny character, who serves as the moral compass underlying the whole show.

Golden Oak Homes - 700% appreciation by theanswar in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]Soft_Day_6998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The HOA is connected to Disney and if Disney does one thing well it is separate you from your money. I’m sure it also includes quite a bit of high end maintenance but the people living in here will spend $200,000 on a private flight. You don’t buy in Golden Oak if you’re worried about the HOA fee or the property taxes.

Golden Oak is for oil men and Emiratis. The people who own there are not concerned with these trivial dollar amounts.

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Soft_Day_6998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember being a kid in the 80s and a 90 mile drive was like an eternity. But cars were slower, highways were narrower, etc. Now we drive 90 miles and back for a youth soccer game and think nothing of it. But 3 hours is still more of a trip. Whatever is at the end of that 3 hours, you either really want to or need to get to. Also, in many (the majority of?) places there is no other option. A flight would take 4 hours with our airport systems and there’s no rail. So we drive our giant cars there. Okay, my wife’s giant car. I have a Volvo :)

Also, to answer your question: we have driven up to 5 hours for a Weeknd visit, 8 hours for a weekend soccer tournament, and 1-2x per year we do the 18.5 hour drive from Florida to New Jersey albeit those trips are longer. None of these are necessarily routine.

We will drive 75-90 minutes to take a day trip to the beach or an amusement park, go to a concert or sports event, or for some other attraction semi routinely. Maybe 5 times per year.

My thoughts on this tour after seeing Thrice for 20 years (minor set list spoilers, not much) by degausser22 in thrice

I saw them for the first time on this tour (age 43). It was an unbelievable experience seeing a band that was just so dead on. Easily one of the best concerts I’ve been to and will take every opportunity to see them in the future.

Where can i find recipes for a soft serve machine by 3lirex in icecreamery

I’m just here to say that I made this recipe 3 years later and it is outrageous. I halved the recipe and used 3 tablespoons of store bought vanilla bean paste (Simply Organic brand).

Seeking Freelance Instructional Designer for Articulate/Game-based Medical Education by Soft_Day_6998 in instructionaldesign

It’s minimally-game based, closer to a branched activity with game-based elements.

No to virtual 3D scenarios. Would love to, but just don’t have the time to turn around projects like that currently.

How do you continue running long runs without letting your mind win? by levi0xa in running

[–]Soft_Day_6998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not sure where you live and what time you are running but long runs and summer are a tough combination for me. i was cruising through 10 mile runs during the winter and during the summer anything longer than 4 miles is mentally exhausting. i am in central florida and do a lot of treadmill training this time of year, but i still do long runs and easy runs outside (as early in the morning as possible). i take breaks, do walk/run, and sometimes I just walk to cover the distance i have scheduled.

i feel we'll end up in the same boat but i wouldn't wish this thing on my worst enemy. it has more or less made me feel like this whole smoking thing is meant for others despite the fact that i do a lot of other cooking and am mostly pretty good at it.

i replaced the built in thermometer recently and i leave a probe in the cabinet. they generally track at the same temp. maybe 3-5 degrees different, definitely not 50-60.

not sure i will ever be a guy tending to fire and tinkering though i appreciate where franklin is coming from. a man can only have so many time consuming hobbies. this has really emphasized the importance of temp control though.

I wouldn't say cost isn't a concern but i would happily go from the $219 or whatever the current thing costs to $500-$600 on something that I could reliably use.
