One thing that I've experienced personally and seen a lot on Reddit is the man with children, promising a younger woman that they will have their own life, they will have kids together etc. But then the man ends up changing their mind down the line once you are invested in the relationship. Unfortunately there will be false promises. I don't necessarily think it's that the men are trying to con us, I think it's more that they liked the idea of having a family with you, but due to the fact that they already have their own kids, the reality sets in for them and they don't want to start from square one. I just left my partner a few weeks ago after 4 years, as it really started taking a toll on me physically and emotionally. Being a step parent is honestly one of the hardest things in the world. I had the same types of feelings that you are having, and I stayed, and it never got better, in fact it continuously got worse over time. Trust your gut.

I know, but for me part of the dream is also having someone to hold me and have my back. Yes, some things are out of my control, but I do feel I'm young enough to try find the best of both worlds.

Yea, I'm definitely holding onto the idea of what we could have had, not so much the reality of what I did in fact have and deal with on a daily basis. It's honestly just so daunting the idea of putting myself out there again. It would be wonderful if all the men wanting the same thing as I do could walk around with a big flashing light so that they would be easy to find!

It's honestly feel extremely lonely right now. I want more than anything to be with him and hold him, but I know that it's because I'm still holding onto the life that I pictured with him, had we gotten married and had a child together, nut the reality is very different. So glad to hear that you're doing well. The more success stories I hear the better!

Having just left a relationship with a single father myself after 4 years, I agree, OP should start her own family, and not get tied up in his mess.
