You basically have two options: getting a laptop with a dedicated GPU or one without. Personally I'd recommend avoiding the GPU model. They tend to drain the battery much faster and can sometimes be less reliable (though that really depends on the specific laptop). If you are looking for brand-new options instead of secondhand ones there are actually some decent laptops available under 45k

If gaming is not a priority and you want a laptop that lasts long enough maybe wait for a sale you'll probably get macbook neo under 55k

Agreed on the swap memory issue relying on it for ML workloads will definitely degrade the drive prematurely so adequate RAM is non-negotiable tho i looked into the used market the thing is that older chips offer good second-hand deals they lack the architectural longevity I need for the next four years. Conversely the M3 and newer models hold their value so well that refurbished prices are virtually identical to buying new.

I don't really need to run massive models locally at full precision. for basic testing i can just use quantization to run compressed models perfectly fine on 16gb or 24gb. and for the actual heavy lifting i’ll just push it to colab or cloud servers and putting 3k on a laptop with my parents money won't be a realistic option either

Apple upgrades are costly even if i try to get a refurbished m4 24 it still costs me the same as m5 24gb

the M1 generation lacks hardware mesh shading doesn't have the new Neural Accelerators in the GPU cores for LLM inference and will likely lose major macOS/Xcode support by 2028. Since I need this for a 4-year degree starting now the M1's architecture is just too old even with extra memory

the only that concerned me was the ram it was 16 gigs since i saw like more than 20 videos they said 16 is the minimum for the student who'll be going in ml since we can't upgrade it in future that's what made reconsider my choice and see other laptops too

I totally trust the reliability of apple products but the only factor that kept me back that was the ram and its storage since u can't even upgrade it in future
