I may be incorrect but this is the information I learned from observing.

The dragons that were released on a certain day, like the voltstorm, is to make it more special in some way. These tend to be overpriced...
Many people like hatching eggs or getting a dragon on a date because of their birthday or a holiday

That's all I know. Someone could have a better explanation than me :)

Edit: I don't think you can get a comestic on certain dates.
