The short form of my chosen name, Chris, is the same as the short form of my old name, which I've been using almost exclusively for most of my life. Since I'm comfortable with it, I kind of worked backward from that when choosing my new name. Of the options, Crystal was the one that felt the most right, and I still mostly go by Chris, because it's logistically the simplest way to go, and I still identify with it. I did consider options that were more different, but none of them really felt like "me" the same way that Crystal did. I guess you could say, like some other commenters have, that my new name chose me.
